Artist History
Biography: A Boy Named PlutoDan Cohn has been called a lot of names, but the only one he ever liked was Pluto. He was given the name by a friend, a mystical Vietnam veteran and ex semi-pro football player, who said Cohn was an "old soul" who was "really far out." Cohn’s choosing to keep the nickname indicates he may have been on to something, however, one thing certainly is true: Pluto has traveled a long, long way to become what John Perry of Stuff at Night called a "subtle, emotionally evocative" songwriter.Baptized a musician practically at birth, Pluto’s earliest memory is of attending church choir rehearsals as an infant. When his family moved to Pennsylvania, late night jam sessions at Pluto’s parents’ house became the norm. (When June Carter passed through for a local gig, little Pluto had to sleep on the couch.) Poor sleeping habits notwithstanding, Pluto managed to make it through high school and upon graduating he moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory with such jazz luminaries as Cecil Taylor, Jim Hall and Ran Blake. During this period, Pluto played in several jazz ensembles including a quartet with Chris Wood (later of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and a sextet that performed arrangements of his own original songs. At this time a change in direction was forced by an unfortunate battle with tendonitis. Unable to play guitar for three years because of this injury, Pluto focused on songwriting, spending hours before work each day singing his ideas into 4-track recorder. He eventually developed some methods and alternate tunings that allowed him to play guitar again as he focused on writing songs that he wanted to sound like "If Paul Simon had a little more Flannery O’Connor in him." Pluto has played extensively in the Boston area with his band Grits, playing his original songs and proving himself as a natural performer. In 1999, in addition to performing over 50 shows with Grits and composing material for his solo record, he has also booked, road managed, and, when necessary, even played bass for Accurate Recording Artists Hummer. Grits has consistently received enthusiastic reviews in the Boston press and has been favorably compared to Dave Matthews, Mark Knopfler, and John Hiatt. Since January 2000, Pluto has toured five times and played over 75 shows, criss-crossing the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine. As a solo performer and with Grits, Pluto has also opened for Agents of Good Roots, Jennifer Kimball , The Pale Brothers, and Merrie Amsterburg. |
