Artist description
A small ensemble of York-based young singers in their twenties, the Ebor Singers brings a fresh approach to the performance of 17th Century music.By attempting historically informed performance style and pronunciation, the ensemble recreates music as it might have been heard at the time of composition. The group principally exists to perform works rarely heard, many of which are new editions by the group's director, Paul Gameson. |

Artist History
The Ebor Singers was set up by Paul Gameson in 1994 as a means of bringing to life the 17th Century French music which he was editing for his DPhil. The choir drew on students and graduates mainly from the Yorkshire area.Since then the choir has drawn a considerable following in its regular concerts in York Minster and elsewhere. They concentrate their repertoire in particularly continental European music from the 17th century, filling a niche almost forgotten in the world of classical music. In addition to their 6-9 concerts per year, the choir has been the subject of a Channel 4 documentary, and has performed on local radio. They have also participated in a National competition for early music. The name 'Ebor' derives from the Roman name for York, 'Eboracum'. |
