Barely a year old and hailing from Raleigh, NC, The Nickel Slots is the new project from former Lustre front man Will Marley. Where Lustre fit like one of Ken Stringfellow's dresses, the Nickel Slots have more of a t-shirt and dirty jeans feel. Gone are the noise pop punches favored by Lustre, replaced instead with a rocking, roots flavor that finds Will's gruff voice and clever lyrics wrapped around guitars that favor something closer to southern garage rock.Opening with "Hollywood," an uptempo ode to La La Land, and followed by "Hell of a Whole Lot Better," the excellent choice for the first single, White Lies then settles into a bit of a groove before really hitting its stride with tracks seven through 11. While the subject matter of "Louise" may be a bit heavy (it's about a daughter coping with the fact that her father wanted a boy), it's one of the best songs here, and the first on the record in which Marley borrows a few power chords from his former band. The Slots carry this momentum with them into the catchy rock of "Amnesia Buzz" and "Pages," a tribute to the Replacements in which Will coolly sings lines like "On the stage they rocked the crowd awake in a drunken rage, Girls would fall all over Paul." Rounding out the album are the Smithereens-ish "For A Little While" and country-tinged closer "Lucky Stars."Catchy enough for the casual pop fan and serious enough for the songwriter crowd, White Lies and Cigarettes is a winner of an album from a musician that was sorely missed subsequent to the break up of Lustre. Deep South has brought us Marvelous 3, Athenaeum, and Sister Hazel, so expect good things to happen to this deserving band.- Joe Lutz (Amplifier)"The Nickel Slots' bar-pop reveals a welcome grit and edge; those intangibles, coupled with Marley's keen eye for detail, make White Lies & Cigarettes many steps above a guilty pleasure."- Rick Cornell (No Depression and Spectator Magazine)"Raleigh's Nickel Slots toe the line effectively between pop and alt-country on their debut CD...it's a winner."- WB (Charlotte Magazine)"Will Marley's latest project,The Nickel Slots, have staked out a far happier geography. The need for sonic bleed has evolved into countless layers of catchy rock, all driven by a thunder-pop engine. The music is both impressive and easy to digest."- Todd Bowman (Creative Loafing)"Will Marley returns to music in the shape of The Nickel Slots. Less noise than Lustre (his previous venture), but as always, immaculate pop songwriting and southern charm."- Kenneth Johnson (The Charlotte Observer)"The band (The Nickel Slots) has great songs, lots of energy, national quality, and big potential."- Kasie Byers (The Battalion)
