    Artist description
Formerly the vocalist/songwriter of 80's cerebral duo Slow Children, Pal Shazar is a dynamic lyricist and musician whose songs describe and insinuate a world of love, lust and self analytic introversion. Her new release, SAFE, is rhythmic departure from her earlier investigative endeavors. With a heavy foot in groove time, she packs her songs with wickedly sharp wit and detrmination to be right even when wrong. Like a conductor of the train of the heartbroken, she sets the standard for redemption.

    Artist History
Pal was born, raised, and punished in LA, where she began her career as a musician. In the 80's she created the band Slow Children with partner Andrew Chinich and began playing clubs in LA. A highly cerebral duo, their music consisted of guitar driven pop laced with intellectual lyrics. Slow Children soon caught the eye of producer Stephen Hague (Pet Shop Boys, Robbie Roberston, Pretenders) and musician/songwriter extraordinare Jules Shear, who together agreed to produce a demo for the group. The demo included the single, "President Am I" which was picked up in the US by RCA Records. Pal moved to New York with Jules following the success of Slow Children and began work on her first solo effort, "Cowbeat of My Heart". They were married Cowbeat was released in 1993 on Pal's own Shiffaroe Records. Her second solo CD, "There's a Wild Thing in the House," was released in 1994 through Transatlantic in the UK and Europe. Featuring duets with Mike Scott and Jules Shear, Time Out / London praised "Wild Thing" as "a coolly crafted work of mysterious power, invention, melody and emotion Pal followed up with "The Requiem Tapes," produced by Pal and bassist Danielle Faye, whose title track, "Requiem," appeared in the 1996 film "Walking and Talking."In 1999, Pal began work on her most revealing record to date. She went into the studio with producer Josh Colow with a bag of songs and not a lot of direction and walked away with a lush, groove ridden release that outshines all that she has done before. Backed by old friends Jules Shear and Jay Bellerose, Pal shows her fans a side of her they had been waiting to see. Vunerable and edgy, SAFE finds Pal still asking questions, but getting much closer to the answers.

    Press Reviews
" On her fourth solo album…her singing sounds more expressive than ever…notably the streak of defiance bolstering her witty tales of martyrdom." And her low-key incantation of the title track's verses lands a lot closer to Patti Smith territory than most spoken musings spun into song." "…the modest, loping grooves she constructs with producer Josh Colow tug the ear sublty, the better to draw attention to her curious flights of reflection and self-analysis, such as the portrait the singer sketches of a gawky adolescent in "Pacific Ocean," a winsome seaside." - CMJ MONTHLY, May 2000 "Safe (Stylus Records) is terrific stuff-melding engaging, brittle melodies with smart, witty lyrics…Shazar is some kind of talented songwriter, capable of being both brainy and smart." - LINCOLN STAR JOURNALYour 10 best bets at NEMO this weekend-Former LA grrrl Pal Shazar…a smart 'n' sultry singer/songwriter." - THE BOSTON PHOENIX April 14-20, 2000"The long-awaited follow-up to her brilliant "Woman Under The Influence" finds our heroine again struggling through a world of doubt and disappointment. Built around Pal's electric rhythm guitar, these ten songs explore many aspects of being sensitive in a cynical culture." IINTERMIXX March 2000"After a two-year hiatus, Shazar returns with SAFE, a creative and somewhat stark collection of songs reflecting the trials and tribulations of love and life." THE ALBUM NETWORK January 21, 2000
