Artist History
A native of New Jersey, Gucciardo started playing the organ at age ten, then switched to the piano. He comes from a long line of musicians. Central among his familial influences was his grandfather,a saxophonist who played in the Army Big Band with the likes of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Frank Sinatra. Although Gucciardo composed his first piano piece in 8th grade, he was inspired by his grandfather to take up the saxophone in middle school as his primary instrument. “Play with feeling,” his grandfather advised. “Put the time, effort, and heart and soul into it, and you’ll go far.” And he has. But Gucciardo discovered the piano was still the better medium by which he could express his deepest emotions and impact others. It was while attending the University of Florida in Gainesville on a full music scholarship for the saxophone that Gucciardo first stumbled across Jim Brickman’s “If You Believe” on the radio. “I couldn’t believe people listened to the music I love to play,” Gucciardo excitedly recalls. He rushed back to the Music Department at UF and worked out Brickman’s song on the piano. “I’d been writing similar music since I was in the 8th grade!” While Brickman’s style is similar, Gucciardo’s ability to write lyrics, play the saxophone, and create sophisticated melodies demonstrates his unique versatility. His true gift, however, is his capacity to captivate all ages with his music. During his sojourn in Montreux, Switzerland with the UF Jazz Ensemble, he was drawn to the piano in the hotel lobby. A passer-by stopped to listen intently as Gucciardo performed “Emily.” When the last chord was played, the man approached him and said, “What you were playing…you brought me back. The music reminded me of someone I lost a long time ago.” This was one of many emotionally connective moments that Gucciardo has shared with his listeners. As a student teacher at Deltona Middle School in Florida, he was greeted with a similar response. When asked why he was going to New York to intern at the Late Show with David Letterman, Gucciardo told a rapt 8th grade audience, “I’m pursuing my dreams. If I have a chance to do what I love, create music, I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen. And you should, too.” His music permeated their MTV-dominated bubbles, and 8th grader Nicole Keller was unable to hold back her emotions. Moved to tears, she shook her head, and whispered to her teacher, “It’s just so beautiful. Where can I get a copy of it?” Buoyed by positive audience responses, he knew he was destined to be a professional pianist. “I also write songs with lyrics,” Gucciardo says, “but I can see the benefit of the melody alone. Sometimes by not defining my meaning or inspiration, people can apply the music to their own experiences.” The integrity, honesty and sincerity radiating from Gucciardo tugs at the heart of his listeners. Like the painter’s brush, Gucciardo’s piano provides the music to the pictures of our past that touch our souls. Refreshing. Intimate. Just as our most touching moments never fade, Jeff Gucciardo is absolutely unforgettable. |
