Artist description
Darshan, named after a track by Sylvian & Fripp, is an experimental rockband. The band was founded in 1996. The line-up of Darshan is pretty unusual: drums, bass, Chapman Stick and female vocals. Besides these instruments Darshan also uses synths, sequences and samples which gives an extra dimension to their music. Because of this unusual line-up the band has a very unique sound which results in a lot of variation between songs. Progressive space rock, ambient and dance are major influences of Darshan. Some names can be mentioned: King Crimson, Björk, (nineties) Bowie, Ozric Tentacles and Red Snapper. Darshan is not trying to imitate one specific style or band but mixes all these different influences in their own style. |

Artist History
In 1998 Darshan recorded their debut demo tape “Trapped in this Circle”. This tape has been received very well by the press, as illustrated by the quotations from magazines, see Press Reviews. In September 1999 Darshan recorded a 6 song CD with the title: ”Innersanctum of a Modernday Bughunter”. On this CD the varied music from the band is shown to full advantage. With danceable songs like “Computerize” and “Gummipuppen?”, the spacey “UFO” and the aggresive “Messed Up”. Darshan is currently working on an even more danceable version of the song “Gummipuppen?” which will be released on a single and goes with a videoclip |

Press Reviews
“Darshan plays exceptional music which is very refreshing and new” (Paul Rijkens, IO Pages 1998)“The band’s music is very original, showing influences of eighties/nineties King Crimson and spacey fusion/jazzrock. The songs are kept fairly compact without freaking out, showing off through endless breaks or extensive solo’s. On the contrary, the songs have been structured intelligently with very strong vocals…To mention highlights is simply not possible because all the songs are of the same high level …Check this band out, the sooner the better! (Carsten Busch, Background magazine 1998) “Although the musicians all have great technical skills it is not the instrumental talent that is presented forcefully to the listener. Or is it? Sure, but the listener doesn’t notice it so easily. Darshan elevates musical technique to pure beauty…The songs are not just a collage of nice ideas but are fairly compact. The wayward music from Darshan is therefore not limited…The subtle rhythms are very against the grain but are never irritating, and that is skilful.”(Martijn Smeets, Playground 1998) |
