Artist History
On an October evening in 1998, John Crouch received a call from someguy looking for a bassist for a band that was forming named "Schrijn".Interest piqued, he returned the call, set up a day to come out to work on some music and hopefully add the finishing touch needed. On that followingWednesday, he met Eric Morin, the guitarist of Schrijn. They worked on thematerial and obviously the connection was made. During the course of the session, John mentioned a friend of his that might be interested in participating in this project also as a second guitarist. Arrangements were made for a subsequent practice and so it went. At the following practice, Geoffrey Bailey arrived and added an indispensable sound to the band. With Leviathan St.John on vocals and Giles Gentry on drums, they continued as one of the only hardcore bands in the Chapel Hill area. This came to and end abruptly when Leviathan decided it was time to move back to his home town of Atlanta and Giles found his interest in performing hardcore music lacking. Thus was the demise of Shrijn. This left Geoffrey, John and Eric in a bit of a spot. With a bit of rearrangement and lot of discussion as to the type of sound they wanted to achieve, they finally formed what is now known as A Safer Place. With John taking over the responsibilities of drummer, Geoffrey remaining on guitar and Eric adding vocal chores to his guitar playing they found a sound that they could truly call their own. With the lack of a bassist, they offset this by using a lower tuning to augment the lower tones of the music. For the remainder of the year, they continued doing shows with this line up with both touring and local bands. And with every show, their sound got tighter, the performances more energetic and the music in and of itself more complex. Each subsequent song better than the one before. Around November of 1999, they decided that it was time to add a bassist to their line up. Hence Dan Kinney of the Dirty Politicians was contacted. He joined the band officially in the coming months and added a dynamic to the music that had been previously lacking. In the months following Dan's arrival in the band, a few shows wereperformed with such bands as Fura, the Human Flys, Brazilia and 400 Years. The subject matter of the music is that which everyone could relate to. Everyone has felt these things at some point in their lives. Betrayal, loss, hope.......... The songs are written not only to be musically moving and energetic, but also to touch something in everyone. To let people that they are not alone in whatever it is that they are feeling. Maybe the wordsin the song can say what they were feeling in a way they couldn't express before. So much the better. The point of the music is to move you..... to inspire and release.........enjoy. |
