The Shadow Cabinet was formed in late 1998 by San Jose local musicians coming together to create a style of music that they really love. One can hear in our music the respect and love for the alternative bands of the 1980's..

I'm rarely impressed these days with live music. Even big budget bands just rarely do anything for me anymore. Call me jaded or bored, but I was REALLY impressed by The Shadow Cabinet. These guys are only a 4 piece, but like early U2, they make it go a long way without anything up their sleeves. The songs are well written, and the performance is tight. The guitar stands out. The guitarist (Lando) uses just the right amount of chorus, delay, melodic stuff... and power c hord madness to make it always interesting. Vocals (Mike) are strong, very in tune, and melodic. Drums (Todd) are steady and solid. Bass, (Mark) is heavily chorused and punchy;: the bass really drives the music. The sound is kinda like Peter Murphy/Cure etc. but unique in it's own way and very energetic. I see no reason why these guys couldn't go on a major club tour right off the bat. Bill Williams - Producer/Engineer Venus ProductionsThe Shadow Cabinet... t his is a real cool band and yes they actually play with real instruments, not just keyboards, so if you miss those live guitars and riffs that rip like a chain saw here is your chance. They promise to put on a good show! So these guys ar e from the San Jose area, and a local Goth band so come on out and support them! Art - Entertainment Coordinator The Requiem With all the new developments in music technology (equipment as well as the capability to record and produce mass quantities of CDs out of your home), StarVox has unfortunately been flooded with an influx of home-made, push button CDs. The problem with a lot of the stuff we've been getting lately, is there's no soul, no real inspiration, no real creativity. For this reason I've been on a bitchy "I want to hear some REAL BANDS" kick. Yeah yeah, drum machines can make beats, but NOTHING replaces the human energy of a real drummer. Made up of Orlando on guitar, Mark Sharp on bass, Todd W. Rhynes on drums (a real drummer!) and Michael James Sessa on vocals; The Shadow Cabinet is a leading example of what I feel, current goth music should aspire to be like. Deep, resonating vocals make it sexy and dangerous. Bass beats roll along in a seductive undercurrent while the drumming is precise and confident. The guitar work is nicely raw, sometimes gritty, sometimes honed to perfection; a voice all its own accord. There is no gimmick here, technically or fashionably. It is basic, in your face, dark rock n roll. And its good! The old guard had it - The Shadow Cabinet knows, they cite The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus and the Chameleons as some influences and say, their goal was to bring back the melody and emotion that these band were known for. For all intensive purposes gentlemen, you've surpassed your goal. Not only have you captured what those bands knew was the real root of music, you've created something uniquely you - something current, so mething that says a lot about what's been lost in the sea of technology lately. Bravo! Their CD Solitude is made up of 7 delicious tracks and was co-produced by the band and Bari-Bari of Mephisto Walz (ex-Christian Death). Impressive no? The first track, "Go to War" is an immediate dance floor hit with a nice, driving beat and god, that guitar! I feel like a kid again discovering gothic music for the first time. Orpheos from Mephisto Odyssey has actually done a re-mix of this song too for those DJs more inclined to Synth Pop/electronic styles. All the tracks on this CD are marvelous but I'll save you my excessive drooling by mentioning just a few more and encourge you to discover them all for yourself. "Behind Your Eyes" is favorite track of mine. Vocals on this are just velvety smooth while booming with power at the same time. The guitar work is playful and darkly mischievous, very reminiscent of early Bauhaus. The over all tone is very sensual. On the other end of the spectrum, track 7, "New Disease", is very gritty and angsty - especially in the vocals. Sessa sings a melodic chorus but after a nice drum break, he rants a bit with a spoken word part that's got some nice echocing vocals in the background. Near the end he's practically yelling, "I shoul d have known better." Long story short - if you've gotten tired of synthetic music, if you've longed for the days of real dark bands with real energy coursing through their veins, or if you're new to this scene and don't know what you've been missing, c heck out The Shadow Cabinet. I think you might just be surprised how good real guitars, real drums, and a sincerely decadent voice sound as you dance the night away. If I could find a club in Seattle who'd play stuff like this all night long, I'd probably drop to my knees and kiss the DJs boots.
