Artist description
Marv Machura is a contemporary folk singer-songwriter from North-Central Alberta. He has been writing and performing original folk music for the past fifteen years. He is known both as a solo artist and a bandleader. He has performed all over Alberta in coffee shops, pubs, folk-clubs, and festivals; he also has appeared on many local television programs. He has released two albums: Red Poppies Growing (1991) and Big Hill King (2000) along with several smaller (2-3 song) releases. Every year his music continues to reach a wider and appreciative audience. With the advent of digital music, his music now reaches the world via the internet, and he has gained fans in faraway places such as New Zealand, Germany, and Sweden.Marv Machura grew up in Edmonton, Alberta during the oil boom of the 1970's listening to and playing all kinds of music; this includes everything from Ukrainian wedding bands to rock to hard-core country, but his main influence (and interest) has always been the contemporary folk repertoire of artists like Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, and Stan Rogers.Marv Machura takes much of his inspiration from his own life and from Western Canadian historical themes such as the Riel Rebellions and the Ukrainian settlement. Like Gordon Lightfoot and other contemporary folk artists, his music has sense of place and purpose. (His own Alberta-roots go back to his Ukrainian immigrant grand parents who homesteaded the parkland of North-Eastern Alberta at the turn of the century.) His songs tell stories about people and places that bring a necessary-but often overlooked-dimension to Western Canadian Folk music. Marv Machura says, "I know that when most people think of Canadian folk music they think of either cowboys or Celts (or both!); but there's a whole lot more to our folk tradition…and, I guess, I'm just compelled to write about it and bring it to the people."For more biographical information and for reviews of his music, please contact Red Poppy Productions at 1-780-922-7605, or E-mail us at red.poppy@3Web.net, or visit our website at ………… |
