Artist description
...group member are from Kansas, New Jersey, Michigan, Kentucky, and Florida via Kentucky......grafting twigs of soul, punk, bossa nova, chamber jazz, Octavio Paz, and an existentially honest faith, they conjure a strangely sophisticated garage-pop that they’re convinced the whole neighborhood will love -- eventually......at the foundation of their sound is a zany bass/rhythm guitar. A brazilian finger-style approach to the instrument gives the impression of a less-is-more stand-up bassist locking up with an equally minimalistic and eccentric rhythm guitarist. ...bratty tone keeps two and three-string jazz voices in check on the treble side. (but no -- not the magicianly hyperchops Charlie Hunter thing)...lyric streams move from the sublime to the problem of evil to wonderfully peculiar qualifications of faith sometimes all in the span of four minutes... ...vocalist Reva Williams is refreshing in her refusal to do/be anything but downright authentic. Too school for cool, her unique tambre and phrasing form the principle instrument of the ensemble......ever the team player, tenor man John Ingram delivers compact, soulful and envelope-pressing expressions which move the listener well beyond an awareness of chops......Among other things, the group has played in various regional venues, showcased at the Cornerstone Festival in Illinois, appeared on network TV, sneaked on to a couple of samplers, and they’re wonderfully unimpressed with themselves.... |
