Press Reviews
31 May 1999 – City Voice ArticleKranium Boys - Release The Kranium Boys, an experimental sound unit, have recently completed a sound-track to the short film "Red Hand". "Red Hand" was written and produced by recent Avalon Studios graduate Hamish McLean. "Red Hand" takes the conventional story of a detective on the trail of a murderer into a twisted uncomfortable region of the darker human psyche. It is narrated by the film-maker himself in brooding rhyme and French inflexion. The soundtrack , which incredibly was taken in one simple take, features keyboard, fretless bass, gnarled and edgy guitar and two percussion sets comprised of metal bars, bells and tom-toms. The Kranium Boys have been performing in their own bands around Wellington for the last three years but prefer to keep these bands' identities seperate from any Kranium Projekts. During this time they have also been running The Kranium Boys and they have developed a keen sense of musical direction characterised solely by a lack of musical stagnation. The recording was produced and mixed by SMS Productions sms_productions@hotmail.com, a local sound production team. If accepted "Red Hand" will be shown at the next upcoming Wellington Film Festival. The Kranium Boys intend to release the soundtrack independently from the film. If you do get hold of this you could consider yourself to be listening to one of the most incisive and well-developed thematic concepts Wellington has seen musically for some time. David Sharp |
