Artist History
Begun by accident in 1989 in a bongwater and cigarette beer can living room with collapsing wood panels in the midst of a heat wave in the shadows of Weseleyan University. Two townies recorded through the condenser mic on an old retail store stereo. The original point was to make background party noise to play when the first guests of the evening showed up. The comforting people sounds would alleviate the awkward silence until more arrived and more was imbibed. Cleared and The Beard were constants, Steered was the figure of flux, a conglameration of anyone present and participating at the time of recording. From here, the band began to make tapes to be played on the stereo of a local sandwich shop where roommate and friend Noel worked. Cleared and Beard would ride together on motorbike to the shop, play the tape, fill the establishment with smoke, and observe the reactions of patrons from the back room's surveillance TV. Momentum built from here. Friends with actual musical skills collaborated, and more coherent sounds resulted. Parties were played, songs were practiced and replayed for the first time. But Cleared and Beard continued to do their living room improvisation with an ever-growing list of Steereds. Spinoff groups, including Assorted Suckas and Slick Smooth and the Groooove were formed to capitalize on the success. A cartoon strip based on the private life of Cleared and Beard, "Plumber," was created. Just as C.S.B. was about to cross a threshold from daring concept into fully realized entity, circumstances separated the two primary band members. They were never able to reunite. Years later, all but one of the original tapes were stolen. |
