Artist History
Formed by Jezabel Kipp in the summer of 1997 in New York City, The Jazzy Bell Project's original line-up included Adou Asouhouni on Piano and Keys, Bruce Jackson on Drums and Tony Cedras on additional Keys and Hammond B3. ******************************************************************************************************** In the fall of 1997, led by Jezabel Kipp, The Jazzy Bell Project produced and recorded their first full length album, "Downtown Brooklyn" (available on www.mp3.com, www.amazon.com and at live shows). ******************************************************************************************************** An instant hit in New York City, The Jazzy Bell Project evolved into its present-day eight-member powerband including a second electric-guitarist, saxophone virtuoso, spoken word master and a state of the art synthesizer, effects, sampler and sequencer addict! Playing weekly at the ultra-hip underground SOHO lounge, marked only by a lone yellow painting of a blue chair near Broome and Spring streets with the small word BLUE labelled below, that came to life under cover of the night at artist Brian Knauer's studio, the Jazzy Bell Project, among the new and half finished surreal New York nightscape masterpieces, added members and worked their craft to the delight of the exclusive crowd that populated Blue every night. Underground Blue's short but illustrious presence sent the Jazzy Bell Project's powerful vibes throughout all of SOHO and by the time Blue shut its latenight doors, the Jazzy Bell Project was booked twice and thrice weekly in SOHO's more above-ground venues. The band and those lucky enough to experience Blue will never forget those intimate evenings and the birthplace and evolution of the latest Jazzy Bell Project. ******************************************************************************************************** You can catch The Jazzy Bell Project live at popular New York City venues such as Don Hill's, The Knitting Factory, Baby Jupiter, Bell Caffe, Boom, and Brooklyn Mod. ******************************************************************************************************** In December of 1998 The Jazzy Bell Project recorded their second album, "John Glenn's Voyage," live at Don Hill's. John Glenn's Voyage is produced by Gene Gagliardi whose production credits include 3 Grammy award winning songs for artists including Shania Twain, Oasis, Counting Crowes, Soul Asylum, Bon Jovi and Kiss. John Glenn's Voyage is scheduled for release in the Spring of 1999. ******************************************************************************************************** Jezabel Kipp, constantly blazing the way, has the prolific Jazzy Bell Project working on their third album, "Territory," now in pre-production. |

Press Reviews
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- Sunday, August 8, 1999: "Jazzy Bell Project, ``Song for My Father'' (MP3.com) -- New York City contemporary- cool band led by French transplant Jezabel Kipp. Instrumentals seem especially suited to MP3s, since the listener is surely multitasking. This acid-jazz cover of the Horace Silver classic is just one of several notable tracks available from this group." ******************************************************************************************************** LIBERATION (PARIS) "Eclipse Moteur!" -- August 11, 1999: "The Jazzy Bell Project, a band of seven New Yorkers, with chief bassist/singer, Jexabel Kipp, and her african, american and french musicians in trip-hop jazz land. In concert for three nights, Paris." ******************************************************************************************************** L'EVENMENT WEEKLY MAGAZINE (FRANCE) - April 1-6, 1999: FRENCH TOUCH IN NEW YORK -- The Creation Of A New Movement! Singer - Jezabel Kipp of the Jazzy Bell Project: FOUR HUNDRED SHOWS IN EIGHT MONTHS "This french originally from Lyon is the archetype of the integrated artist. Besides, as she says herself, "New York City is a city where you can feel immortal very quickly." After ten years spent in NYC, she feels as at ease in a studio as on stage, playing acid jazz, funk or rock with kids from the bronx or surrounded by great jazz names. In the last eight months she performed four hundred shows and has just finished recording the second album ["John Glenn's Voyage"], of the Jazzy Bell Project, the band she created two years ago. "I chose the city with the most speed in the world, but when I close my eyes, its the Alps and the Mediteranean that I see." Written by Marie Sophie Boivin. ******************************************************************************************************** The RAMBO REPORT! Volume 2 Issue 12 (www.breakingartists.com) Chauncey's Rough Guide to JazzThe Jazzy Bell Project "L’Amour Fou" "New York has always been ground zero for music, and Jezabel Kipp, the ringleader of this 8-piece ensemble shows us some of the reasons why the city’s reputation is well-earned. Taking some great studio musicians, some hip arrangements and infusing them with a whole lotta groove and energy, they create a cutting-edge hybrid that defies easy categorization. Whispery muted trumpet, soulful keys, and Kipp’s expressive voice carry on an international conversation, while the rock-solid bassline churns it all along. I’m going to make a point to find one of their shows next time I’m in NYC." Written by Chauncey Canfield ******************************************************************************************************** COVER MAGAZINE, 1999 Volume 13, Number 1 (http://www.covermag.com):Jazzy Bell Project, John Glenn's Voyage, Fertility Music: "She calls it the non-ego band. The Jazzy Bell Project formed by self-taught bass player, singer, songwriter Jezabel Kipp appears as a fertile mix of African, American and French musicians gather to burst the state with splinters of trip-hop jazz. Following their first album three months ago, their new recording, “John Glenn’s Voyage,” is launched this month, surprise from such a young band. Instruments, freed by loose initial composition, improvise, take firm position yet able to fuel one another in a perfect coordination of master-musicians – A. Atoms, R. Sharma, L. Medelgi, T. Cedras, G. Vendetta, M. Gough – truly playing together. Even the voice flows into the dance as simple another pulse. If What we are is what we want, follow the trip and get a sip of Jazzy Bell’s spirit!” Author: Celine Curiol ******************************************************************************************************** THE VILLAGE VOICE, Nov. 17, 1998:Camel Choice: “Bell Caffe: Jezabel, a Euro-sassy Acid-funk Diva, makes music the way you have never imagined. She plays live at 10 p.m. every Sunday. GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!” ******************************************************************************************************** RADIO FRANCE INTERNATIONAL: (http://www.rfimusique.com/gb/Datas_Articles//Thu03129815_27_42.html):Vibrations, French Touch in NYC, The American Eye: "With some time to kill between 13 NRV and DJ's Jeff Sharel and Fred Galliano, we went downstairs to another stage where The Jazzy Bell Project was about to start. A very funky, jazzy trip-hop quintet, the improvisational based Jazzy Bell Project was a perfect contrast to 13 NRV's tight, well-rehearsed style. Formed a year and a half ago by French ex-patriates Jezzabel Kipp and Laurent Medelgi who have both been living and playing music in NYC for about 10 years. After playing together for only 3 months, they recorded their first record, "Downtown Brooklyn," on the Fertility Music label. After some personnel changes, Jezzabel and Laurent have put together what they call their, "perfect band" and have been gigging around NYC with the current lineup for 3 months and will be going back into the studio next month to record their second record, "John Glenn's Voyage" which will be released early next year." Author: Bop Tweedie ******************************************************************************************************** KNITTING FACTORY KNOTES: program guide nov/dec 1998: "Here's a voice you won't be able to resist. A little bit of jazz, a little of trip hop, a little bit of . . . oh well, that's why the French call it 'je ne sais quoi'!" ******************************************************************************************************** PERRIER FRENCH TOUCH FESTIVAL: Le Programme Guide: "Jazzy Bell Project: Brought together a year and a half ago by Jezabel Kipp (singer/songwriter/bassplayer), the J.B.P. is an international mix of French, African and American musicians blending ambient, drum 'n bass, trip-hop, and funk into the future sound of jazz or, as the band calls it, "Future Music". The J.B.P's improvisational style continually expands the boundaries of their music, resulting in a unique experience." |
