Press Reviews
""Dynamics," that is the first word that comes to mind when listening to Wendall, Spline’s debut release. The fourth track, "Cave," enters the verse with crunch soaked guitar rifts, a steady beat, a fluidic bass, and solid vocals. As one’s head can’t help but nod to the insidious groove, it is almost possible to feel what is coming with the bridge. The guitars suddenly open up in to a metal driven rift of chords, perfectly accented by passion-filled cymbal bashing, which can’t help but become a tidal wave of colossal magnitude. Yeah, they play metal all right. Needless to say, Mace McMillan understands dynamics when he’s on his drum kit. It is quite refreshing to hear somebody play with such passion and depth. It is hard not to fall in love with a drummer that will sacrifice his cymbal’s well-being for the greater good of power filled tune. So with their heavy guitars, rich sounding bass, solid drums, and heavy vocals, these guys from Plant City sure did knock the shit out of my expectations. "-by Mike Morter , Tampazine----------------"Their '96 demo had a few moments that were deceptively doomy, but this full-length proves these Plant City chunkheads were spilling over with ideas. Last cover's release was a red and black motif, while the color code chosen here is black and blue for a good reason: this is heavyweight, cranium-bustin' thud metal- fueled with a full tank of flamin' diesel and a bad attitude behind the wheel. Sure, we could tell you that they sound just like Korn, turn out the lights at the office, and be home before the sun comes up. But Spline's aggro gut-punch is a lot more solid. They use old school (Sabbath, Maiden) dynamics, slowly building up to their neck-wrenching, full-nelson body slam. Forgoing the dithering solo exchanges, Spline square off the rhythm components against one another (it's a musical thing, trust us). That said, the deafening crush of the guitars plays against the molten meter of Mace McMillan's drums, while bassist Bryan Exum accents a third offbeat. The overall attack transforms into something quite tribal, like some of Sepultura's ethno-metal work, without becoming too brainy or too progressive. "-Focus Magazine #117 |
