Press Reviews
"Rock musicals ("Hair," "Tommy," "Jesus Christ Superstar") sort of did it 30 years ago with their Hendrix-like guitars. Stephen Sondheim did
a little bit of it 15 years ago with his high-tech, pointillist Chromolumes in his Pulitzer-Prize winning "Sunday in the Park with George."
Andrew Lloyd Webber (the mature, post-"Superstar" Sir Andrew) did a high-voltage variation on it with his roller-skating extravaganza
"Starlight Express." But then again, with the proliferation of microphones, synthesizers, and shrinking orchestras in most Broadway houses,
aren't they all "electronic musicals" nowadays?
Not after you've heard "Atreus Dawn," the Brownbrokers musical which opened last night at the Leeds. Composers and arrangers Georg
Bissen and Dave Peck have crafted a score that is eclectic, occasionally witty, always innovative. Small orchestra? Who needs one - this music
is entirely composed and mixed on a computer. The score is remarkably cohesive, even though Bissen and Peck have inserted strains of
hip-hop, reggae and even waltz music into it. Ambient (swirling chords with no beat) and trance (said chords with a beat) form the backbone
of the score and continuous underscore. The recurring melody of "Mother's Hymn," with its accompanying, dissonant harmony, is
beautifully haunting." - The Daily Herald |
