John played in a band called "Devine Earth"for about 6 years. Since is disbandment, John developeda unique digital home studio and has since produced two full lenth albums.Something Karmatic produced in (1999) was Johns first attempt as a digital artist.Doing all the recording and instrumentation himself, he soon learned how beautiful it can beto live in a time that allows this. SK's feel is of a slow blues album with a contemporary overtone.Great strings and orchestation help fuel this album.Closer To Freedom (2001) is Johns second efford as a solo artist.CTF is a prime example of how persistance and determination will get you great lengths. John meet up with former bandmate Ben Odom (Bass) for the recording of this album.Ben's bass playing offered more of a solid struction to the overall sound of John Floy. The Future: We are going to keep doing what we are doing until we can't do it no more :) In November 2002, John release his critically best CD to date "Take To The Sky" TTTS offers a real vintage style. Artist History
John Floy started playing at the tender age of 10. His first guitar was a Ventura acoustic which he still plays today. He started out learning basic blues from listening to all the greats from Albert King to Steavy Ray Vaughan . Around the age of 15 John started getting into more progressive rock styles such as Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix . This is where John finally found his nitch.
John formed his first band called Strange Daze . Basically a garage band that played covers from Jimi Hendrix to The Eagles. Playing lead guitar John picked up his first Fender Stratocaster and has never gone back to anything else again. I really love the sound of a Strat, you can tell exactly what kind of emotion is coming across just with one note. Along with a whole slue of effects and amps John started creating music with a little bit more punch.
John went on to play in a jazz ensemble band in High School. The Yukon High School Jazz band was one of the tops in the state at the time. John won The Outstanding Musicianship award at the jazz band finals at Southwestern University. It was a real rush to play in front of that many people. Most of the people in the audience where music and jazz enthusiast and it was great to hear the applause from people with such high musicial standards.
At the age of 20 John formed a new band called Devine Earth . Devine Earth was a pop/rock band that featured Dawnmichele on lead vocals. Dawn’s voice added a lot to my music. Devine Earth stayed together for four years before disbanding because of personal differences from within the band. I think the band was wanting to go into another direction so things just started to fall apart after a while, but it was fun while it lasted. The band produced two full-length CD’s and played gigs all over Oklahoma City and Norman, OK. Their track Dawn Of Creation made it all the way to number 4 on MP3.COM’s alternative pop charts.
Three years after the band broke up John kicked around with other musicians and played side gigs. In 1998 John started investing money and time into a home digital recording studio. He produced his first album Something Karmatic in the spring of 99. It took a whole year to work the bugs out of my studio. Its amazing how great computers can be but when you start using it for recording you run into all kinds of problems. After John worked out all the bugs Something Karmatic was a reality. I am very proud of this album, it is literally a one man show. All the mixing, recording, all the instruments and programming where done by yours truly. The album produced instrumental hits such as Miss You and Beyond HiFi . The cover of the album was taken of the hallway right outside John’s apartment door on the 12th floor. The photo was then flipped over to create an optical illusion.
In 2000 John Floy kept up the pace with his follow-up album Closer To Freedom . I think Closer To Freedom is 500% better than Something Karmatic, mainly because I had a lot more experience in mixing and with the actual recording process. Mixes that took me hours before I can pull off in minutes now, plus the fact that I have added some more effects and purchased better microphones. The song Amara in particular is one of my favorites from the album. Its got a little of everything…and I think the overall tone and flow of the song is fantastic. Closer To Freedom continued to do well on mp3.com and artistlaunch.com. On this album John hooked up with former Devine Earth band mate and bass player Ben Odom. Ben’s playing on Closer To Freedom added a lot to the mixes I believe, he has a fantastic free style bass player.
Currently John is working with singer/songwriter Susan Lea to produce her first debut CD. We currently are writing music at the moment for the album. We have 2 tracks already recorded and ready to go so we are getting there. The mix of Susan’s vocals and John’s guitar playing will be a good mesh. Look for Susan Lea on mp3.com and artistlaunch.com in the future. John is also producing his third CD at the end of 2001. I think on this one I am going to take a different route and try to be more of a story teller with the music. I want the music to change moods and the songs to flow into each other. This will be a big challenge but I think the final product will be something out of this world, thanks for listening.
