Artist History
When poet Ruth O'Really complained to friend Ray McAvoy that his band sucked, Ray responded with a challenge: come down to the next practice, and, if you think you can, do it better yourself. O'Really showed up with a book of lyrics, but discovered that she could sing. Three years later, they placed an ad on a bulletin board. The responses: Jerry Kessler with his mandolin, dobro, and bouzouki and 17-year-old prodigy Buckley Mills with his rock-n-roll violin. Within a few months, the band was opening for national acts from Warren Zevon to Buddy Guy, and within a year were on their way to recording their cd, F in the Ineffable. They toured for three years, becoming well-known for their amazing live improvs and jams.O'Really says," We were before our time. At that point, female angst-rock had not yet gone mainstream, and nobody knew what to do with a band that lacked bass and drums. We were too loud and rockin' for the coffee houses and too eclectic for the rock clubs." It was this very problem that led to the end of the band. O'Really quit during the recording session for their second album for creative differences. |
