Artist History
Saloon formed in 1998 in the spiritual home of shoegazing Reading (UK.) The band converged to make subtle, but sexy, European lo-fi music, as an antidote to the over-hyped, over-produced, flag-waving Britpop movement that, at the time, was in its death-throes. By combining the traditional sounds of guitar, drums, strings and the softly sung vocals of Amanda Gomez, with the electronic noises of theremins, stylophones and an array of analogue synths the band have created their own "robot folk pop" sound.
In their five years the band has gigged constantly, as well as playing in the UK, Spain, France and Holland, the band have played shows with Laika, Stereolab, Quickspace, Herman Dune, Movietone and many more. In 2000 they ran their own club night in Reading called "Happy Robots" bringing the likes of Electrelane, Pram, Billy Mahonie and more to the town. The band have released four full 7" singles as well as numerous split singles. In 2001 they released their debut album "(this is) what we call progress." It was produced in Reading and New York with the help of Mahogany main man, Andrew Prinz (www.simdisc.com). In 2001 the band had two songs "Impact" and "Free Fall" voted into Radio 1 DJ John Peel's Festive 50. In 2002 they bettered this with "Have you seen the light" at 26 and "Girls are the new boys" taking the number one slot. The band have also recorded three sessions for the John Peel show. Saloon's second album "If we meet in the future" is released on June 16th 2003 on Track and Field (UK) and Darla Record (US) on CD and LP.

"Theramins are waved at frantically. Melodicas fellated mercilessly. Guitars crunched valliantly and beats syncopated splendidly whilse vocalist Amanda ruminates in a tri-lingual whammy of heartbreaking plaintiveness" - Sleazenation |
