Artist History
This Seattle based quartet began in 1997 with Guitarist Aaron Price, Bassist Christian Wilson and Drummer Eric Blackman jamming in a home basement: “We were just trying to play stuff that didn’t suck”, says Christian, a former member of the seminal early/mid 90’s Seattle band Stumpy Joe. “Well…too much anyway”, adds Eric. “Yeah and we were on the lookout for a singer that could fit in with that whole not-sucking-much thing”, explains Aaron, “Only we weren’t having much luck…” That’s when something really wild happened. Aaron’s roommate and sister, Alexis Price, approached the group after listening to countless practices. Alexis, a trained vocal jazz veteran from touring high school and college choirs, was inexplicably interested in trying out for the job. “At first I thought she wasn’t serious…I mean I knew she was a great Jazz singer but I didn’t think that she’d really wanna rock out”, claims Aaron, “But she blew us all away”. All agree that the sound of June Detector was solidified the first night that Alexis first laid her sweet but powerful voice on top of the crunchy, pounding pop rock backing that Eric, Aaron and Christian provided. Eric, a Western Washington Grad and former member of Bellingham band Jerkwater was surprised to find himself in a band with a singer that actually sang. “Lots of singers sort of just scream melodically, few can actually really sing and pull it off in rock and roll.” “It’s kind of strange”, says Aaron, “I mean I used to tease her when we were kids about singing all the time. I could only take so much of her singing freakin music from Grease you know? Now I hope she never stops singing cause she kicks ass. ”June Detector seems poised for bigger and better things planning on promoting and touring for their new record as much as possible. “We just want to keep rockin”, replies Christian to the question of June Detector’s future. “Yeah and not sucking!” adds Alexis. “Well…too much” Eric tempers finally. |

Press Reviews
Their debut CD/EP, “Beware the Ides of June” produced by Martin Feveyear and released on local indie label Bands We Like, has also drawn praise: “’Front Porch’ opens with an upbeat guitar riff, contrasted by pensive lyrics. While many bands would not be able to pull off such a situation, June Detector does so powerfully.” --Pooja Khandekar UW Daily/www.youngrestless.com, 6/27/99 ---- “With six songs and no clinkers, June Detector's new ep is packed with catchy rants of love lost. "Zydeco," the last track, is a triumph of animal pop.” --Dave Liljengren Pandemonium Online 5/8/99 |
