Press Reviews
"I love this guy! Okay, where do I begin? He's playing steel drum and singing-how many times do you see that? It is very innovative. His improvisation is really great! I love what he is doing! Singing with his instrument-I've never seen anyone do that. It's a whole new twist!" Cassandra Wilson Blue Note Recording Artist Bet On Jazz Black Entertainment Television "My word would be "originality." I thought he was also very original also as a lyricist. Those lyrics are very interesting. The way he was able to scat and play the pans simultaneously is incredible! And I like the quality of his voice. He has a very, very interesting vocal quality." Bruce Lunvall President Blue Note Records "I like this guy. He's got a nice sound to him....a nice style. Whether you would call it Jazz or not-who cares. It sounds good! I don't think I've seen anything like this before-playing steel drums and singing at the same time. I like the originality!" Shirlitta Colon Music Director, WJFK AM/FM "I Liked it! It Was upbeat that is the thing about Jazz it can take many forms. This kind of fusion with contemporary Jazz could be a new sound for the future!" Bruce Walker SR. V.P. Here's an opportunity to hear New Orleans' premier practitioner of the genre in his fifth year as a solo artist since departure from the local U.S. Navy Steel Band. Composer/arranger/panman Boyd has given the name "world groove" to his blend of jazz and Carribean influence like calypso and reggae. Gambit New Orleans Weekly Jazz and Heritage Festival Listing May 4, 1995 "Gregory Boyd is a master of the steel drum..." Anthony Gozzo Rhythm and Music Magazine Vol, III, Number 10, 1994 "The Inclusion Of Steel Pans in a Jazz setting is unusual but New Orleans own Gregory Boyd makes it work..." Geraldine Wycoff Offbeat Vol, VI, Number 8, August 1994 "The cult of the Steel Drum is perpetuated by BOYD, New Orleans' finest player of the Trinidadian instrument.
