Press Reviews Xpress magazine, #716, 2/11/00, p.23 by Chris Cobilis LUX MAMMOTH HERTZ CIRCUS BLOODSTAR independent release Theres a gargantuan four-legged monster dressed in latex pants and high heels, crushing our fair city into a million bits. Its shrill bark forms the words Lux Mammoth and no amount of ammunition or upturned noses will stop it. While the Lux Mammoth live experience can be earth shattering to say the least, their debut recording, Hertz Circus, is a much gentler and defined listen, displaying perhaps what they might sound like under a microscope. With sampled drones as the foundation to their tracks, Lux Mammoth twist the parameters of their electronic equipment to extract the ghost in the machine that inevitably ends up riding the beast. It is textured, emotive and really quite dark, all the while held together by an underlying musicality. Tracks such as De-Luxe and Bustline Nightmare show a group who know the electric bass, but play it as if they were less fingers or wearing oven mitts. Like Jaco Pastorius in an ambient zero gravity kinda way. Hertz Circus is its own best description. It breaks down its own music into independent sounds and lets them interact by themselves. But make no mistake- this is the sound of rock'n'roll, as is as far removed from sound art pretension as pretentious critics are from the true essence of art.
