    Artist History
Tourist had its beginnings in the late 90s as a side project for Blaine Braun and Mark Radloff. The initial sound was quite diverse ranging from raw indie to more polished progressive pop and heavier rock. After experiencing constant problems with lineup changes and other pressures, they decided to put Tourist on hold in 2000 to focus on other projects. Blaine went on to front Twist, which featured former members of Econoline Crush. The CD was released and generated a great deal of interest in the band, helping to secure a publishing deal with Music and Media International in Los Angeles. The band toured and made a guest appearance on a major Canadian late night show as well as a series of radio and print interviews. They also shot two videos and received regular airplay across Canada. While outwardly the band was a success, internal strife would lead to the bands eventual demise. Mark played bass in a series of projects while continuing to write and record which led to being asked to do a Western Canadian tour with Morning Maker. The band was scheduled to play with the likes of Default and the Tragically Hip, but an unfortunate car accident ended the tour early and forced Mark to spend three months recuperating from an injury. During the downtime Mark and Blaine planned the resurrection of Tourist. Determined to put together a group of ambitious and focused musicians that would build the backbone of Tourist and yield the success they had worked towards in past projects. Two months of auditions finally yielded Andy Skov from Portland Oregon. A 23 year old guitarist with a history in punk and progressive rock, he would bring a do anything attitude and strong songwriting ability to the band. After a few false starts David Swart came aboard as the drummer after listening to the first rough demos and being impressed with the strength of the songs. David had wealth of touring and recording experience with bands such as Todd Kerns and Kristy Thirsk (Rose Chronicles, Delerium). The band spent a couple of months writing together in preparation for recording the first demo. During the recording Mark ran into Greg Whitebeck whose band Morning Maker had recently dissolved. The two had discussed doing some writing in the past and now seemed like the perfect time. Greg rehearsed with the band and the chemistry was immediate, here was the final piece of the puzzle. Greg brought an extensive background of writing, recording and touring. His previous band Morning Maker had criss-crossed Canada and portions of the US on many tours. They had opened for acts such as Default and Nickelback on major Canadian tours, as well as receiving extensive airplay and press coverage.
