Artist description
Project K are a 3 piece from Echo Park, California. Weird instumentation and nifty M/F harmonies combined with occaisional bludgening drumming pretty much define the bands sound. Visit their official site to read about the band, look at hysterical photos from their last tour, or just watch it act weird right before your eyes: http://www.projectk.net. The new CD "Testing Underway" is available from Bong Load records at: http://www.bongload.com. |

Artist History
Formed right on the edge of the new century, Project K quickly recorded their first CD, TESTING UNDERWAY (Bong Load Records, http://www.bongload.com), and hit the road for 5 weeks to promote it. Heading immediately back into the studio to record again, they hope to tour again immediately, and are interested in playing just about everywhere. |

Press Reviews
LA WEEKLY November 2000Project K, The Dagons, Maddog, The Rotters at Mr. T's Bowl. "Oh, your backward mind," sings Greg Kay of Project K, "filter out what's left behind." Leaving behind the boring old rock past is exactly what two of the bands on this odd bill (which includes sets by sloppy punks the Rotters and the solo debut of former Legal Weapon/Controllers drummer Maddog) are doing. Although Project K have elements of Wire's artiness, Possum Dixon's quirky intelligence and Lazy's stop-start garage juxtapositions, their debut CD, Testing Underway (Bong Load Records), doesn't really sound like anybody else, except perhaps Kay's previous underrated local art-punk groups, the Paper Tulips and the Ray-O-Vacs. There are lots of cryptic, dense, poetically mundane lyrics and chorus hooks that occur in unexpected places, all dissected by Kay's coolly scientific shards of non-cliché guitar and former Popdefect drummer Nick Scott's surf beats. The Dagons, who recently relocated to L.A. from San Francisco, just released their second CD, Make Us Old (Dead Sea Captain), a collection of moody, seasick-swooning ballads with macabre lyrics that sound like Sylvia Plath reinventing Grimm's fairy tales. (Falling James)GLUE MAGAZINE July/August 2000Project K--Testing Underway (Bong Load)The latest outing for Greg Kay's off-kilter surf guitar stylings, Project K is also the latest in LA supergroups--this one a trio of Kay (Paper Tulips, Ray-o-Vacs), drumming ho Nick Defect (Pop Defect, Masher) and bassist Io Perry, who recently left Green and Yellow TV. The debut CD spotlights the crunch and twang of Kay's Velvet's-via-Ventures sound, familiar to anyone who knew the Paper Tulips (and reminiscent of the '80's surf geniuses the Raybeats). The elements bond on TESTING UNDERWAY when Perry duets with Kay; her pretty, unpretentious voice gives the perfect ying to the angular yang of it all. Defect's drumming, which can be a tad overwhelming live (though entertaining; he reminds me of a sexy Grover from "Sesame Street"), has been turned down enough to show how subtle he can actually be. This is the first thing you should buy (Online at www.projectk.net or www.bongload.com) with the cash you make off your next garage sale. (Laurie Pike) SPANK MAGAZINEWinter 2000Project K : s/t My suggestion would be to put "Little Things", the lead off track here, somewhere else on the record – perhaps at the end – because it’s laid – back, perfectly – cadenced chorus doesn’t really let on to the ass – kicking rock that ensues throughout the other songs. I was pretty ho – hum until "Just One Kiss" kicked in – then I perked up immediately at the raw energy, the show – off beats, and rock – rock – rock – rocking rhythms. From then on, the pace never slows (okay, until the finale, which is a beautiful song called "Lullaby"); instead, you’re propelled through some hot late ‘70’s vibe, some risky ‘80’s moves, and a whole truckload of the swaggering punk rock cool that gets me all worked up. Fucking great. MD (Bong Load Records, P.O. BOX 39557 Los Angeles, CA 90039 www.bongload.com) |
