Artist description
Diesel’s music admits no dilutions, ramblings or make-up. It goes straight to the point, fluent and coherent. Gustavo Drummond ( vocals, guitar), Jean Dolabella (drums), Leo Marques (guitar) and TC ( bass) form Diesel, whose first album has already accomplished a few accolades. Following the successful trail opened by Sepultura and Overdose back in the 80’s, the four-piece had their first Demo-CD publicized in New York City, getting the approval from some relevant names, like Frank Mckay (Los Gusanos’ manager), Pierre Vudrag ( Mutiny Records President) and the american underground media , baptizing the band’s Rock n’roll as “honestly nervous” (Sal Italiano from Concrete Magazine). In Brazil, critic Arthur G. Couto Duarte, collaborator for “O Estado de Minas” daily newspaper and Showbizz” magazine, classified DIESEL’s sound as “flammable, precise and with an enourmous pressure power”, recognizing that the self- titled debut CD “unleashes na incandecent explosion of bilious vocals, high octane producton riffs, rhythmic bursts and electric sparks.” With lyrics in English sung without an accent by Gustavo Drummond’s lacerating voice, Diesel’s Rock surpasses the Grunge influence, following a trail of its own, with a web of sharpened guitars sustained by the perfect locking between the tribal drums and bass, as the overall dynamics range from soothing harmonies to furious screams. |

Artist History
Diesel was formed on August ’97, in Belo Horizonte, MG, with Gustavo Drummond (vocals, guitar), Jean Dolabella (drums) and ex- Overdose bass player Eduardo Weber. On the same year, a Demo-CD was recorded with “Pull” and “Kill the Inner Loser”, as Gustavo and Eduardo set off on a 5 month season to promote it in the U.S. In ’98 Ian Dolabella replaces Weber on the Bass, and Diesel performs on a series of events and alternative sites, like the “Bizarro Festival”, “Profest”, “Trash”, “Butecário” and “Expresso da Meia Noite”, with audiences ranging from 150 to 1500 people. Most songs on the album were written around that time. On May ’99 Leo Marques joins the band, adding more depth to Diesel’s music. After the recording process, Ian leaves the group and, on January ’00, TC takes place on the bass duty. On April ’00, Diesel performs at their self-produced record release party, at the “Francisco Nunes” theather, which became a sold-out concert, making their CD’s second pressing of 1000 copies necessary, since the first 1000 were sold in less than 2 months , breaking sales records at Belo Horizonte’s CD stores. The album became number one, even beating sales of major label artists like Metallica and Santana. With critics’ approval, a loyal and growing fan base and the songs “Drain” and “Burn my Hand” already getting local radio airplay, Diesel now wants to reaffirm its presence in the United States, Brazil and Europe, supported by the alternative media and independent executives and managers. |

Press Reviews
“Still on Belo Horizonte, DIESEL also shows how competence could obtain its reign on the city crossing barriers from Seattle to London. Recommendations to their live performances as well”.“Fluxo” Fanzine #2 – Art , Culture and New Media February 2000 Arthur G. Couto Duarte from “O Estado de Minas”, one of Brazil’s most influential daily newspapers, wrote:“Minas Gerais’four-piece DIESEL gives the recipe for an incendiary sound.”FUEL TO THE FIRE“Flammable, precise and with an enourmous pressure power .That’s what DIESEL’s sound is like, as their debut CD unleashes an incandescent explosion of bilious vocals, high octane production riffs, rhythmic bursts and electric sparks. A person somewhat malicious would say that the group mimicked the grunge tendency with all its dilemmas between metal, Punk and Pop. But the difference –brutal, in stylistic terms- is that while Creed, STP, Days of the New and others try to repeat the formula to the exhaustion, DIESEL wants to tear the sewings of that genre apart, inside out, exercising with dignity its tricks, until they’re able to turn it into something else. With such attributes, DIESEL could comfortably sit back on Seatte’s caravan market and attract easy sellings, but musicians- Gustavo Drummond (vocals, guitar), Leo Marques (guitar) and brothers * Ian (now replaced by new bass player TC) and Jean dolabella (drums) don’t make use of such facilities. First, because they are not foreigners, but from Belo Horizonte (Brazil) . Second, because their album is a legitimate independent. And third, because they alredy seem to have paid tribute to the bands (Alice In Chains, Soundgarden) that provide the foundations of their sound. On this very CD, the perfect locking between the guitars jumps out to ears. In the middle of the crossfire from “Pulltaquepariu”, “Drain”, “4D” and “Redhead Saint (3 of a kind)” are Gustavo Drummond’s vocals. Owner of an accentless English and a voice among the mightiest, he probably is one of an reasons why the album had an easier penetration into the american underground media. For those and other motives, DIESEL is a promise of more fuel to the rock n’roll fire that’s yet to be spread.” O Estado de Minas- “espetáculo-discos” sectionMarch 14th 2000*Actually they’re cousinsDavid Brown at EMI-Capitol wrote on a personal letter to the band: “Hi ! It’s David Brown here at Capitol Records . I received your CD and have listened to it several times . This is very good and has a lot of potential . Thanks for thinking of me and sending this for me to hear ! I’m assuming that you wouldn’t mind if I passed it along to some people at different labels here ? could I get more of them ? Thanks David.” David Brown at Capitol RecordsFebruary 2000Rhonda Saenz , independent L.A publicist wrote also on a personal letter :“I’m glad to know that you’re still rockin’ away . your CD sounds really good , I liked it a lot !!! Regards Rhonda.”L.A publicist Rhonda SaenzFebruary 2000 |
