Artist History
Inspired by the Sex Pistols and the Beatles, Steve Heflin and Knight Berman formed Blond Popsicle in Montgomery, AL after several prior attempts bit the dust (Jim's Bathtub, Am, et al). Soon drummer Jim Woodall joined the fold, followed shortly thereafter by guitar wiz Kenny Pittman. Lying about their locale, the group secured radio play on Atlanta's Georgia State radio station (WRAS 88.5 FM), and decided a move was in order. Woodall stayed behind, but the others packed up and soon a string of radio plays followed, as well as a string of drummers. Many gigs and false starts later, the band called it quits in the early 90s. Heflin went on to form the seminal experimental co-operative known as Butt Jowl Picnic, while Berman and Pittman played briefly together in Open Air Surgery, with Pittman joining up with Supermodel shortly thereafter. At present, Heflin is living in Houston, Pittman in Dallas, and Berman on the Jersey Shore where he toils away at his Marble Tea project.... |

Press Reviews
"...Blond Popsicle reminds us that it's alright, in fact it can be really great to play well-meaning and earnest pop when you don't sound too much like Egghead or (pre-Badfinger cover) Dreams So Real, and it's actually fun to hear well-intentioned, lively music like this ring and jangle gloriously from the speakers again. They even throw in a touch of Lloyd Cole (who still counts for the early 80s mood 'cause of the Commotions first album) and a Love Tractor-ish sense of instrumental mix and tempos. And the whole demo left us pining for the days when the likes of the Icons, Oh-OK, Love Tractor or the Brains held somester-long leases on the Athens/Atlanta party axis..." CMJ (10/19/90) ----------- "One of the most indescribable of local bands, they are reminiscent of no one so much as Syd Barrett - not so much because they sound particularly like Barrett, but because they share a similarly experimental approach to songwriting and a similarly ruffled delivery. Their songs, for all their stylistic obtuseness, are quite memorable, evincing an admirably active intelligence and wit. Blond Popsicle's idiosyncratic approach could yield some major originality...
