(SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE) - - - - - - - - - - - "Fathers know best" - - - - - - - - - - - Serahtonic's hard-to-classify songs aren't so much written as they are born - - - - - - - - - - - Nina Garin STAFF WRITER 07-Sep-2000 Thursday- - - - - - - - - - - To speak with the members of Serahtonic about their music is a lot like having a conversation with three overprotective fathers. Not just your run-of-the-mill overprotective dads, either. These guys are determined to guard their beautiful daughters (read: songs) from the harsh world for as long as possible. That's why the trio -- bassist Crasi H. Tone, guitarist Chris Eaton and vocalist Toni Casher -- have "incubated" their songs for months making sure they're absolutely ready to be introduced into the world. They've been writing and crafting songs for their first album, "Together Alone Again for the First Time" (released on their own label, Sonic Heart Records). The disc will be available with the price of admission at their Casbah CD release party on Sept. 29. It's a 10-song collection filled with psychedelic guitars, grainy vocals, electronica samples and tons of synthesized bleep bleep noises, making the album practically impossible to classify. It can be called rock. It can be called experimental or electronic or folk. It can be called indie, that's for sure. Serahtonic is so indie that the guys handle every single part of their careers themselves -- from the recording and artwork to the promotion and booking. "We don't want to lose focus of what's important and make it a business, "Eaton says." All three of us eat and sleep and breathe this, " Tone adds. "We take it very, very seriously. "We hope we can affect people's lives in the same way other people's music has affected our lives. We know how powerful music can be." The guys are so dedicated to their music, getting information about their personal lives is almost impossible. "We don't like to talk about how we like surfing or where we like to hangout," says Tone. Here's what they will share: The group has been together for three years. Everyone is 26 years old. After Casher moved to San Diego from Long Island, he met up with Tone, who hails from Bulgaria, and Eaton, who's originally from San Francisco. And the word "serahtonic" is a fictitious one -- that way, they don't reference themselves to anything. That's it. The rest of their personalities is revealed only in nuances -- the way they gesture with their hands when discussing songwriting. How they speak faster when talking about their in-concert performances. For live shows, the members have dedicated themselves to creating a free-flowing, artistic environment using multimedia presentations, word collages and designs. They swap instruments on stage. The upcoming CD-release party will even include dancers and magicians. "In the future, we're going to incorporate smell and taste," says Eaton. "We're trying to attack all the senses." Sitting around a small table at downtown's Cafe Lulu, the guys agree they're all about giving people goose bumps with their songs, making fans feel some of the heartache, alienation, love and joy that is expressed on their album. "We hope people get as excited as we are," Tone says. "To us, it's like cooking a really good dish. You don't want to keep it for yourself; you want to share it with friends." - - - - - - - - - - - Sounds Like San Diego runs the first Thursday of each month. - - - - - - - - - - - Copyright Union-Tribune Publishing Co. |
