Press Reviews
Marginal Man - "Double Image": Ferocious. Then again, so was their debut LP "Identity" but this is much more mature. Already blessed with considerable finesse to match their monstrous chops, they were already among the 10 best US hardcore groups, and now they could be 2nd to the returned (and back with a vengeance) Bad Brains. Let's be frank; the majority of hardcore records that appear are fair to OK to atrocious to useless. It'[s almost offensive how many of them aren't worth the vinyl they're pressed on, regardless of how many of the thrash brigade swallow them up; from the perspective of taste they have nothing more to offer the world than room service capitalism, the tiniest and least cultured and self-revolving target market known to American capitalism. But by the same token, it's equally distasteful how many magnificent punk or HC associated records get the turn up of the nose from new music hipsters too cool to listen first. This is the main reason that most missed on the sheer talents and lyrical brilliance of Bad Brains and Minor threat until they were on the verge of breakup, why it took Husker Du, the Minutemen, and the Replacements five years and four albums each to attract any notice, and why so many are still in the (total) dark about important groups like Agent Orange, Effigies, Plugz, Descendents, none of whom are even punk groups but come from that end of the spectrum. Considering this, stubborn HC bands like Marginal Man will have it especially difficult since their sound is roaring, but these guys are pure songwriters and heirs to the overrated but at its best amazing DC scene (and influenced by masters from the Ruts/SLF golden era of musicianship). So this is the chance, and I can't stress it enough that it is you who may be the loser if you don't at least give it that unbiased taste. Try Turn the Tables, shades of Reason or any potluck track, plop that needle down, you can't go wrong. - ROCKPOOL |
