Juan Micheal Gartrell Born : Herman Keefer (Hosp.) Sept. 15,1953 to Robert & Mercede`s GartrellDetroit Michigan Since early teens has been influenced by music: Father was jazz enthusiast, soJuan grew to like that style as well as R&B Motown style of music. By 1968, Juan took guitarlessions at Capitol Music School for (9) months. By 1970-72 Juan was playing park ingagementswith a group called KASUKU MAFIA success orchestra / Leader Norris Patterson- Saxophonist(Motown) By 1972 Was playing with James Ellison Quintet ( Trumpet and keyboards) In 1974,Juan met Barnett Strong ( Motown USA) working on his won recordings, after going to L. A. in1975, Juan wasn't able to make things work out well (recording wise). So Juan went back to Detroita few months later, he played the club circuit with locals musicians and bands. Met Tommy Butlerof a theatrical play called "SELMA" in 1976. he landed in an orchestra pitt playing music withStrings & Horns an effort he calls " great experience" In 1978, Juan played with a singing groupnamed " The Floaters" touring on road engagements. by 1981 Juan recorded and toured with GeneDrummer in Detroit on an LP called Just The Way I Feel for ( Capitol Records ) 1984 say Juanpayaing in a local Jazz/Fusion group named "Kokyia" ( an African word meaning "Summon ThePeople" |
