Artist description
Like the screeching tires and instant jerk of a high-powered hell ride, HYBRID MUTANTS have landed. Their veins pump with alcohol and adrenaline. They pack the fury of a karate chop to the back of the head. ?Vigilante? blasts of pure punk power and finely tuned aggression flow from the unlucky thirteen tracks on their self-titled debut CD on LEM records. Based out of Charleston, SC, the five mutants have been together since 1997 and have released a seven-inch single for the song "That's OK" and contributed a rippingcover of "Dairy Queen" for the DWARVES tribute 2x7 inch, both released on Transparent Records. If history is destined to repeat itself, then the HYBRID MUTANTS are indeed "The Future of Punk Rock". Songs like "That's OK", "Nameless Thoughts" and "Vigilante" all rip with that old school flavor, and they hold their own as masters of in-your-face pure Rock and Roll. "The songs are about the usual things in life like, beer, sex, discontent, barbecue, death, you know, shit like that," relays the Human Mutant, "It's not that cerebral |

SHREDDING PAPER #13 Summer 2002
HYBRID MUTANTS—”2 On The Table” CD 15:59
There is an odd meeting of emo and hardcore punk these days, in bands like the Hybrid
Mutants, where the music is straight up angry and fuckall, but the lyrics are packed full of emotional tragedy. Slamming away hard enough to bring down the walls, the Mutants spin tales of friends who went away and marriages which went kaput. Growling hardcore fans who still possess a touch of sentimentality deep inside should enjoy this disc. Marc

HYBRID MUTANTS
2 On The Table: CD
Metallic Punk in the mid-80’s style of Beyond Possession and the Boneless Ones, except that rather than skateboarding or Tel Tale Heart, the Mutants sing about loss: loss of friends (to death and growing up), loss of trust, loss of Apollo 19. They do sing about beer, though: one particularly good section goes, “used to be this time of year we’d hang out and drink beer/ but now I’m drunk by myself throwing up in the wishing well.” I like that wishing well part. Unfortunately, earlier in the same song is the line, “used to be this time of year we’d cut the rug like a couple of deer,” which is just sick and wrong. -Cuss Baxter (LEM) |
