Artist History
Since their inception Degrees.K have consistently drawn capacity crowds to their high energy, dynamic & engaging performances. Formed through meetings at Rockquest between 1996 and 97, and mutual enjoyment of each others proir musical exploits, they have now been creating sounds for over three and a half years now.
Degrees K have completed a number of National Tours and an Australian jaunt, and have supported the likes of Australian bands the SuperJesus, Grinspoon and Spiderbait. They have also played with established New Zealand bands such as Pacifier, Garageland, Pan Am, The Feelers, Fur Patrol, The Chills, Stellar*, Zed, Steriogram, Tadpole and Slim.
Their debut album, 'Life Like' is was released on 17th August 2002. The album was released on long established Christchurch indie Rock Label Failsafe Records, home to releases by 'Throw', 'Loves Ugly Children', 'Pumpkinhead', 'Squirm', 'Chicane' and '147Swordfish'.
Degrees K core members Eddie Castelow (Vox/Gat), Dean Cameron (Bass/Vox), and Chris Spark (Drums/Vox) have more recently been joined by second guitarist and vocalist Ben Edwards who helps the band expand on their solid-as-a-rock live sound to showcase the bands more layered textural orchestrations developed during the albums recordings. The bands sound is founded on the power of Sparky's solid yet intricate rhythms, fluid, pulsing bass lines from Deano interweaving with Eddie's angular, melodic and sometimes searing shards of guitar, and Ben is the streamers flowing in the breeze on the side of this steam train. Around, beneath and punctuating this dynamic roller-coaster sound are impassioned, honest, intelligent and sometimes obtuse lyrics, also from Eddie.
A move across the sea has occurred, but frequent return trips to their country of origin and their beloved nurturing ground of Christchurch will always be in the plans. So too will exploring their new stomping ground, the big red and gold land of Australia, and excursions futher abroad.
