Artist History
THE TALE OF BURNING MIRROR Many bands formed in England in 1974. Many bands broke up. Many bands had their vocalists go mad and flea to Peru to raise alpaca. Perhaps only one group, however, fits all three of theses descriptions: Sheffield's legendary Burning Mirror. Formed by journeyman musician and night watchman at Sheffield's tank factory, Duke Wisdom, the band's original lineup disintegrated just as their debut album was breaking the top 90 in over 60 countries. Ironically, by the time that release "Desired: Purity," reached the top 60 in over 90 countries, the band was reassembled and ready to tour.Says Wisdom of that turbulent period, "Hey, you try working with a kleptomaniac, a pathological liar, and an ornithologist. And that was just (original member) Slim Freedom. You can just guess the rest." Still, he remained focused on his original objective: "I wanted to be the first bloke ever to tour with a bayonet on his guitar." Gaining fame in England and France as a member of the 22 piece art rock outfit The Infamous Lords and power pop trio The Legs (featuring Bo Python), Duke Wisdom hoped with Burning Mirror to unify some of his influences. Says Duke, "I've been know to listen to anything from Gatemouth Brown to Dvorak to the Kinks. Sometimes all at once." Surrounding himself with like-minded individuals, Duke Wisdom has carried on the Mirror tradition for over 25 years. Some of the ever-revolving cast of the band currently includes:Xavier Twin (from the U.S. group King Tut): Known throughout several lands for his outrageous techniques, Twin reportedly owns over 1,800 guitars. While on tour with Detroit's multi-platinum Tut, Twin once amazed onlookers by playing a solo while parachuting into Shea Stadium. Tut, meanwhile, were performing across town at Madison Square Garden. Lad Jury (the human man): No guitarist is more widely acclaimed in the Middle East. Jury even has a line of gloves and hats named after him in Syria. Known for slyly quoting Ravi Shankar during his lengthy Improvisations, Jury has performed solo on more than 13 cable talk shows.Guy Drain: Drain is one of rock's great scholars. He owns a Masters degree in Temporal Percussion from Rutgers, a Doctorate in Multi-polyrhythm from Baylor and has even been to Canada. One of a handful of drummers whose cymbals are custom made in an abandoned Bentley plant, Drain has done piccolo snare overdubs on several Disney soundtracks.Sir Pennington Seed: Primarily a sculptor and a chef, Seed was coaxed out of retirement in the late '90s by Duke Wisdom (reportedly for a hefty sum). His bass work was once described as "alternately shocking and ghastly" by Fretted Bass magazine. A crowd favorite, Seed has been known to play shows in full armor on horseback.DJ Blasphemer (of the Seventh Sine): Some say he's a millionaire. Some say he is penniless. All agree that none can make a guitar sound like a dolphin or a dolphin sound like a guitar the way DJ Blasphemer can. His real name forgotten or unknown even to himself, when not performing with Burning Mirror or Seventh Sine, DJ Blasphemer roams the earth in search of exquisite cod.The Mummy: "The Mummy" is an assumed identity assigned by Scotland Yard. He arrived in Britain in 1980 with only a tuxedo and two keyboards to his name. Aside from this we know only two facts: 1) He refuses to travel by aircraft and 2) He once rented a flat next to David Gilmour. |
