Artist History
Mark Elliott, known as a “singer’s singer,” has been performing for twenty years. Soon after he picked up his first guitar at the age of thirteen, he began performing in nursing homes, retirement facilities, and local fairs. In these early years, listening to the record collections of his parents, including Jim Croce, Carol King, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot, provided the initial spark for his singing and writing. Soon, Mark began playing regularly in bars and clubs in the Washington D. C. area. During this time he started composing his own songs. Many of his songs were drawn from his experiences as he moved with his family from the sandy hills of Oklahoma, to the coal mountains of West Virginia, to the rolling countryside of northern Florida, and to the bustling northern Virginia outskirts of Washington D. C. While still a teenager, Mark released a critically acclaimed recording of his songs, “Common Ground.” In one of Mark’s gigs at a folk club, the legendary Tom Paxton was the featured artist. After listening to Mark’s performance, he sat Mark down for a “heart to heart” conversation in which he encouraged Mark to move to Nashville to pursue his music career. Tom was instrumental in helping Mark land a publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music. Mark says that the company in Nashville “consisted of the catalogues of Tom Paxton, John Denver and me.” Although the company soon decided not to keep a Nashville presence, Mark moved on to other publishing companies, including Maypop and Sony-Tree Music Publishing, where he has achieved success.Recently, two of Mark’s songs have been recorded as singles by Victor Sanz, “I’m Gonna’ Be There,” and Neal McCoy, “Every Man For Himself.” Both singles hit the charts, with “Every Man for Himself” currently in the top thirty on the Billboard chart. In addition to honing the craft of songwriting, Mark has continued to perform his songs. In 1993 he formed the duo of Culley and Elliott. Together, they performed at venues all across the nation. They earned best singer-songwriter awards at festivals from Mississippi to Kerrville, Texas to California. The duo recorded a CD of original songs entitled “Flight of Dreams,” which continues to be played at folk rock and Americana radio stations throughout the country. Although the duo broke up, Mark has continued to develop his own artist career. Presently, Mark is in the studio working on a project of his songs with producer Doug Wayne (Universal, Abril, Warner Brothers and Paradoxx Records Brazil). Mark’s rich and passionate voice, coupled with song lyrics that are thoughtful and moving, have earned him a reputation for stand out live performances. Doug Wayne has captured that same magic in the new studio recordings. |
