Artist description
Parsons was in the habit of carrying a notebook with him at all times, using it to jot down thoughts, ideas, and songs. When he died, one of these notebooks was passed along by his sister, Avis Parsons, to Gram’s friend and former International Submarine Band bandmate John Nuese. Nuese took the journal back with him to Connecticut and put it in a desk drawer until he could bear to look at it. When he did eventually pull it out, he found some of Gram’s best work, songs that had never been completed and that had never been heard by Gram’s many fans. Nuese realized these songs should be recorded as part of Gram’s legacy, but felt he should wait until he found exactly the right mix of writers and musicians to do them justice. He waited for 20 years. In the fall of 1993, Nuese met Mike Ward, a kindred spirit with the same musical sensibilities as Gram, someone who might be able to take the notebook and make something powerful from it. He entrusted the journal to Ward, asking him to do what he could to bring Gram’s words and tunes to life. In 1995, Ward took the journal to Los Angeles in hopes of finding other songwriters who would be interested in the project. While there, he met with hit songwriter and RCA artist Jim Lauderdale. Ward showed Lauderdale the song "Blurry, Slurry Night," with original lyrics taken from Gram’s jour-nal and put to music by Ward. He asked Lauderdale to help finish another song from the notebook, "Blessing for Being." Lauderdale eagerly accepted the challenge, and the completed song is classic Parsons "Cosmic Cowboy" music. While in L.A., Ward approached other talented songwriters such as Ed Bergoff, Eddie Cunningham, and Eddie Dunbar, asking if they would like to work on the proj-ect. Each was honored to have the opportunity to help write a Gram Parsons song. Their respect for Gram’s music is obvious in the finished work. |
