Artist description
Lucky bear an uncanny resemblance to the early Bangles, back in the days before Prince, MTV and ballad writers got hold of them. Lucky offers clean, guitar-based pop that's as catchy as it is familiar. |

Artist History
Kristi & Kelly Callan, formerly of Wednesday Week, put together an acoustic 2-piece coffeehouse band in 1995, showcasing country-flavored pop songs. After several months of competing with espresso machines and arty chatter the sisters were ready to get back to their electric roots. David Nolte (David Gray, Wednesday Week, The Last) was waiting in the wings, having kept an eye on Lucky's progress around town, and the three enlisted long-time pal Mike Lawrence (Mad Parade/Action Now/The Haymakers) to fill out the band. They plugged their amps back in, ditched the coffeehouse scene and joined the pop movement spreading through the Hollywood clubs. In late '95 the band went into the studio with veteran producer Earle Mankey to record "Live A Little." The critically acclaimed album was released in early '96, followed by supporting tours to the Southwest. |

Press Reviews
"...Lucky flexes a mature pop-rock style on its debut album. "Live A Little," released by Santa Monica, Calif.-based Temple Bar. Especially impressive are Kristi's lead vocals, which may recall a less insolent-sounding Chrissie Hynde; the crisp production of veteran Earle Mankey (best known for his work with Concrete Blonde); and a raft of fine material, including the top-flight originals "I'll Bet" and "I'll Get You Back" and a cover of the Jayhawks' "Settled Down Like Rain." -CHRIS MORRIS/BILLBOARD 3/16/96; "...singer/guitarist Kristi Callan offers clear, strong lyrics without the pomo ironic attitude...And musically, Lucky offers clean, guitar-based pop that's as catchy as it is familiar, with more nods to the Byrds and Beatles than to any modern bands." -LISA GIDLEY/OPTION 9/96; "...the band's fiery, country-tinged playing, combined as it is with a pleasing pop sensibility, brings to mind early Lone Justice - only minus the religious baggage and with better songs." -DAN EPSTEIN/LOS ANGELES READER 2/96; "...Kristi Callan sings as passionately as ever, with a voice that sounds like nobody else's. Callan has always sung very discretely (as opposed to discreetly), her songs almost sounding at times like pop hymnals, as evidenced by the exquisite "I'll Get You Back", a warm, passionate, circular ballad which displays Kristi's immpressive vocal range. Wednesday Week fans will feel warm fuzzies when they hear "Hold Me Back" and "Zillion Stars", both containing that band's signature crunchy guitar and great chord changes." -DAVID BASH/AUDITIES 9/96; "...The overall effect is akin to a cross between Belly and The Breeders, with less self-consciousness and more tunefulness. "Live a Little" should be sought out by every fan of hook-laden songs played and sung with zest." -SAM GNERRE/RAVE 2/96. |
