Artist History
Toasty the Toad first dragged itself up onto dry land in 1988, armed with a four-track and a dream, or maybe a hallucination. Founder Chris Ault and bandmates Darren Schubert, Kyle Hester, Shannon Alexander and David Kirby made a splash in the stagnant Houston music with their first single, "Thar She Blows," the story of Ahab sailing atop a sea of screeching guitars. Now a rock anthem, the song was originally recorded in the course of two hours, upstairs in the Ault family’s spare bedroom. "Thar She Blows" and "Depeche Toad" -- a collection of Depeche Mode cover songs -- became a favorite on Houston college radio, and catapulted the band to the top of the local music scene. But by the early nineties, the pressure of playing one show year after year began to take a toll on the four friends. Their audience lost interest in the positive, feel-good message of songs like "Dead Babies," and steered toward the darker waters of grunge. Things within Toasty grew testy. When Darren announced he was leaving the band to pursue his other passion -- breeding miniature ponies -- the five former friends went their separate ways. But now, like a phoenix, rising from the ashes, Toasty the Toad has risen from the ashes, phoenix-like, and now is really high, way out of the ashes. Rested, reunited, renewed by new blood and new dreams -- Toasty the Toad returns with a new philosophy, and a new album... Ribbet for Her Pleasure. |
