Artist History
Formed late in 1992, under a chemical Technicolor sunset and the bright flares of petroleum refineries, Mumbletypeg began playing music in a cluttered hallway of a club dubbed Fuzzgun, in illustrious downtown Beaumont, Texas. Their music was met with great enthusiasm from the local kids and great adversity to the local culture. The area tends to suck life from its energy, much like it sucks energy from the ground it sits on. Fuel becomes fossil. Although it was difficult to find strong support in Beaumont, Mumbletypeg had built a definite fanbase there and began spreading to Houston. The music is a result of varied tastes, talents and opinions. Mumbletypeg's sound comes, as it should, from each of parts. Fronted by the strong-voiced, and sometimes tounge-tied Ian McCullough, the band establishes immediate attention from it's audience. Corey Cobb weaves a wall of melodic abrasion on guitar, along with the newest family member Kenneth Johnson, whose guitar presence brings a driving energy to the sound. Jody Smith's precise bass playing, heavy with force, and Greg Hall's potent compexity and a sheer strength you can't help but feel, provide a structure for this work to be framed upon. It is rare for a metal band to bring a new sound to the genre, yet Mumbletypeg engulfs listeners in a complex blend of aggresion, emotion, melody and ingenuity, anchored by a consistantly strong rhythm. If not only in their music, perhaps in their past it can be shown that adaptation is one of their strengths. Their sound and creative energy has endured and after four drummers, three moves, additions and subtractions of additional guitar players (Kenneth being the best gift given by the move to Austin, two demo tapes, four hundred clubs, sixteen full-contact stage collisions, two CDs, 99 bottles of beer, and numerous chemicals later, contiues to endure...and grow |
