Artist History
Says Molly, "I spent four years in a popular Colorado acoustic-rock band called 'Sweet Water Well.' We performed all the time and traveled around the mountain towns. We were really good, but we all eventually decided that four years was too long a time to be traveling around in a van. We got burnt out and all went our separate ways. I became a teacher in the Denver Public School system, where I discovered that 80% of my students were from non-traditional backgrounds. They lived with one parent, grandparents, gay parents. Sometimes I'd bring my guitar and they'd all want me to sing Disney songs. But I've always felt that a Walt Disney world marginalizes a lot of kids, and we don't live in a Walt Disney world. I feel that every kid has a right to feel normal. One day when I was babysitting for my niece, I wrote a song called Double Daddy. It was about two brothers whose dads were gay partners. I liked it so much I decided right then and there to do a whole album about tolerance and diversity. But I didn’t want to just preach. I also wanted an album that would pass the real test—that kids would want to listen to. It was a long process, because I wanted only the best of Denver’s musicians to play on the album. Now that it’s out, it’s been really gratifying to see such a positive response. And the kids really love it! |
