Rolling out of Wichita, Kansas, .end of story is a steamroller disguised as a rock band. Led by one Skot Reed, they mix equal parts of Rush and Helmet, and they've put together a monolith of an EP that dwarfs anything that's come out of the region for a long time. And I mean anything. 'Battleship Gray' kicks off the EP, and it melds towering guitars, rumbling rhythms and passionate vocals into a brawny, brainy sound that's unlike anything out there. Neither old-school nor 'nu-metal', EOS incorporate the best of both styles and walk away with something entirely new. There's enough guitar heft here to satisfy the most rabid rock dogs and enough melody to satiate those who lament the atonal state of guitar rock in the new millennium. 'Soul Yesterday' sounds like Creed with more muscle and brains than Stapp and Co. could ever hope to muster. I have to marvel at the level of sophistication these guys bring to every single song on this EP. 'Radio Waves' is a nod in the direction of Rush, whose progressive bent is taken and run with to stunning effect. The rhythm section of Andrew Coss (bass) and Buddy Truesdale (drums) lay down the concrete necessary for Reed's guitar to reach warp speed. EOS' cover of Argent's 'Hold Your Head Up' infuses the venerable old track with a heaviness that it always begged for, and it's the perfect vehicle for the band to reach across the Classic-Rock divide and grab those who might otherwise overlook EOS' originals. There's a lot to be said for a band that can take an old chestnut like this one and breathe new life into it, and EOS make it as fresh as if it were written last week. Complaints? Just one - a four-song EP is a tease, and it makes me hope there's a full-length CD in the works. Reed and his bandmates present an interesting take on guitar rock, and it's a take that begs to be fleshed out over an entire album. Fans of old and new rock alike will enjoy this EP - and that's a true accomplishment in this broken-mirror world of rock.
