The band formed as a creative outlet for two principal members of the band Gatsby when that project stalled when the first round of shopping demos to major labels turned up nothing. Well, not really nothing at all -- Arista and Elektra wanted to hear more, but the band's manager/venture capitalist wasn't interested in anything short of a development deal. So no second professional demo was funded. As news from other labels dried up and as the band fizzled, the main songwriter and the lead vocalist decided to continue recording songs at their home studio, and Canned Beats was born.
