Press Reviews
Raw 42 MP3 review - Amazonia, Inhibitor, All the Same -A two person band from england using guitar and synths as their solesources, supercreeps walk a line between new wave and electronica, whilethe singer reminds me of suede. this music is actually quite minimalist innature. some of the drum patterns are interestingly missing notes incrucial places, which i'm sure is intentional. it makes the music slightlyunsettling, which is a good thing if you're making songs that explore thedarker side of people, as the lyrics would suggest supercreeps do. theirsongs are well structured and i'm not sure if they would consider this acompliment, but they sound like good pop songs to me. supercreeps are goodat building tension and topping that build-up with a catchy chorus. theguitar playing is clean and precise as is the recording in general, whichsuits the open sound of the songs. there are enough melodies and sounds, but also plenty of space to make everything clearly recognizable. i likethe slightly heavier style of inhibitor best, an excellent example of howto explode into a chorus. cool.Alex ****Burp!!! Sounds from Deep Down, 22.01.99 @ the MaltCross, NottinghamFollowing on where the other three left off, Burp number 4 saw in the New Year. With a slightly electronic theme, Shortwave and the SuperCreeps took to the stage with their own interpretations of what to do with a synthesiser and a guitar.SuperCreeps took to the stage first. Very dressed up with crazy hair, this twosome were a simple line up with Emma doing stuff with technology, and Martin singing and playing guitar ina style that Robert Smith pioneered, yes, the single string one finger lead guitar bit. Some of you may scoff, but to make something of such simplistic minimalism requires more skill than you might believe. Very moving was their set, as they took you through the darker side of the human psyche with such a basic toolkit. Remember, there were no drums or bass, as this was all done with invisible band members manufactured electronically from somewhere in the synth. The SuperCreeps relies very much on space, as it's not so much the notes you hear but the ones you expect that are left out, which creates a kind of tension and suspense in their music. It is almost a trademark. SuperCreeps, to their credit, have already gained some A+R interest, and have a video game music project underway too. Shortwave took the headline slot and made the most of it. Whereas SuperCreeps explore the empty space of sound, Shortwave made a large pulsing, melodic wall out of it and dabbed their lyrics on like graffiti.....Vinny + Al **** Review of flesh & animals by subLove the name. Cool vocals!!!intro: different, cool groove. really good -- it draws you right in. guitars: nice guitar work. really interesting stuff. like the wah swell. like the cure-ish/new order-ish lines. rhythms: a bit too simplistic. you could benefit a great deal from loops and/or samples.vocals: distinctive, but a bit too monotone. also, you could benefit from some effects processing. really like the phraseology. also dig the lyrics. melody: it's catchy in a dark & creepy sort of way. synths: more realistic sounding strings would be really nice. bass could be phatter & could do more during the chorus -- mix things up a bit. also, could use more lush mid-low end synth pads. structure: nice structure. flows really well. you'd benefit from mixing things up a bit. i've done the four chord and out thing a few times myself, but there's not much distinction here between verse & chorus as far as backing instrumentation is concerned. it gets to be too much of the same.overall: i think your song's got album potential, but needs better production. it's not necessarily got single potential though -- this isn't the big hit or the one that gets you a big cult following, but once you've got them, they'll probably like it. you may have that song in you though. definitely worth a listen for those who like to take a walk on the creepier side.Cato and The SuperCreeps, Monday 14th December 1998, The Loft, Derby - City Lights, February 1999It is very hard to quantify exactly what the SuperCreeps sound like, as they cross over many musicial genres. The best I can do is a cross between the likes of Radiohead and Massive Attack. The Creeps use very grand electronic instrumentation (piano’s and strings, as well as more contemporary sounds), combined with Cure-esque guitar styles. Martin’s original, emotive vocals and poetic lyrics then sweep across the musicial soundscape the Creeps have created, giving the listener tingles down their spine. The SuperCreeps opened this evening with ‘Grey World’, a ten minute epic about shaking skeletons and nightmare loving…..sounds about right for them. Martin and Emma looked their usual glammed up selves, with their now compulsory heavy use of eyeliner, masacra and hairspray. However, new guitarist Chris looked out of place, and seemed a little overshadowed by the rest of the band (there was certainly a shadow cast over him by the height of Martin’s hair).Their set tonight consisted of old favourites such as the excellent ‘Flesh and the Animals’ and a revamped ‘Six Months’, as well as some brand new material, such as ‘Social Paranoia’, which despite being their poppiest number to date, was still about the dark subject of torture. The SuperCreeps continue to go from strength to strength; their blend of atmospheric, moody music improves every time I see them. I suggest you go and see them ASAP.For those of you who have not had the pleasure of seeing Cato live before, they are fairly similar to the SuperCreeps in that they also create atmospheric, moody soundscapes. However, there is one major difference - Cato create their sound using only guitars rather than using keyboards. They are very reminiscent of bands such as Slowdive and Chapterhouse.Cato had some special guest musicians tonight, including a flautist and a violinist, which added an interesting edge to some of their songs. Due to the absence of their usual bassist their set was softer tonight, which was a shame as some of their best songs are the heavier ones. Their music thrilled the crowd all the same though. Another band to watch out for. |
