Press Reviews
5/5 stars--Johnny Asia, the self-proclaimed "Guitarist from the Future", is the new king of guitar instrumentals. His innovative guitar playing beautifully manifests itself in the song "Himalayan Sunrise" from Johnny Asias first DAM CD release, The Guitar Avatar. "Himalayan Sunrise" is an energetic, nine-minute acoustic guitar instrumental that exquisitely combines Indian and Spanish influences with a touch of bluegrass. The songs quiet opening chords develop into a constantly changing stream of ornate, lightning-fast melodies, dizzying muted string runs, and rhythmic chord passages. Immediately noticeable is the incredible clarity of Johnnys picking; he plays several notes in rapid succession, but every little nuance of each note is clearly heard. All in all, Johnny Asias "Himalayan Sunrise" is a wonderful piece of music that showcases Johnnys immense talent not only as a guitar player, but as a composer as well. - Jason Spatola, Local Music Stores Online-------"Johnny plays hard. Everything is done with a commitment and drive. My first impression was that of a guitar-playing John Coltrane but actually there is more emotional variety within each track. Sometimes his chords are fun. Complex, but fun and I got the picture of him enjoying himself as he flails away. And does he flail! He has the right hand of all time. There is a tremendous variety of plectrum techniques here and Asia can accelerate throughthem like a sports car. It can sound like the racy concluding section of a classical raga performance...These are high technical achievements." - Ian Gottstein, New Rennaisance "Johnny Asia's musical work is strictly guitar, and he's very good at what he does. There are no lyrics, no fancy hooks, no catch phrases, certainly no commercialism. There is just music. If you want your mind to be able to focus, then Johnny Asia's music is for you. You will simply focus because the music will take you to the mental plane that you want to be on." - Gary Milholland, Underground Music Monthly |
