Artist description
One man, one guitar, mainly, though on the CD, Big Block of Cheese, a great band of crazies backs me up, including BARRIE MAGUIRE (formerly of the Wallflowers and bass player for Natalie Merchant's Tigerlily), singer/songwriter guitarist MUKUND RAO, bassist extraordinare ERIC HAMMARBERG and master drummer GARY GOLD (of the Ben Arnold Band), superstar drummer TERRY MAGUIRE and background vocalists JESSICA BOOTH and MARK GEARY |
|
Music Style
FOLK/ROCK and a tinge of shameless POP with a little FUNK and down-home BLUEGRASS thrown in for good measure |
|
Musical Influences
Oh so many! From DYLAN, NEIL YOUNG and the GRATEFUL DEAD to JAMES BROWN, SLY & his whole big family, to MICHAEL HEDGES and RICHARD THOMPSON and a little ANI DiFRANCO of course MILES DAVIS and COLETRANE . . . . |
|
Similar Artists
I have my own sound, fortunately or not, which makes it difficult for those who are prone to categorize music to do so. Wish I sounded more like Zappa . . . . |

Artist History
From the press kit....
"Jay Sand began his professional performing career in Philadelphia playing fraternity parties and other university venues
where drunken brawling was an acceptable form of communication. He also
branched out to the non-university world, performing too many local holes-in-the-wall to mention.
Sand moved to Boston in 1996 and continued performing there, mainly in folk clubs and dive bars. He expanded his reach to play at many coffee
houses and folk performance series’ around the northeast, especially in New York City and his native Central Pennsylvania. Sand has also toured the world with his guitar, supporting his
voyages by performing in both formal and informing settings such as LiLi’s Pub in Saigon, Ben
Yehuda Street in Jerusalem, at the foot of the Acropolis in Greece and on the steps of the Blue
Mosque in Istanbul.
He has opened for or shared the stage with such varied performers such as Arrested
Development’s DIONNE FARRIS, Rocket99 Records’ BRENDA KAHN, Permanent Records’ TODD
YOUNG and His Rock Band, ELIOT DUHAN of the legendary West Philadelphia band, EDO, Ton of
Mun Records recording artist BEN KAPLAN, CHUCK BRODSKY of Waterbug Records, central
Pennsylvania singer/songwriter DAVID WEISBERG, Green Linnet Records’ CARLA SCIAKY,
Spiderwoman Records’ CYNTHIA MASON, Philadelphia singer/songwriters MUKUND RAO and NANCY
FALKOW and many others. Sand performs often with his brother, MARC SAND as 'The Sand
Family' -- their debut release, Beefcake, is currently available through Permanent Records." |
