Artist History
cHUCk dA fONk fISHMAn moved to Colorado in 1997 to complete his debut album,
The Squishy Declaration, with the help of the Mile High Squared Studios (MH2) crew.
MH2 was established in 1996 to give its members an opportunity to record and release
music of all styles. Chuck collaborated with MH2 founding members Dwayne Wilson
and Neal Landauer to produce much of the music on The Squishy Declaration, dubbing
the collaboration fONKSQUISh. At the time of the collaboration Dwayne and Neal were
involved in live performance with MH2’s Pepperment, which was voted as the best
“hippie-hop” band in Westword’s Best of 1996 issue.
After The Squishy Declaration’s release, cHUCk continued to collaborate with
MH2, becoming a partner in the studio. Anxious to bring his funk to Colorado's live
music venues, cHUCk assembled a live unit, The Mile High Funkers. Due to Wilson’s
and Landauer's commitment to concentrating on recording projects (including the
upcoming CD release, MH2 Time), he sought outside musicians from Denver's burgeoning
funk scene to fill out the band. By mid 1997, cHUCk dA FONk & the Mile High
Funkers were out on the Colorado scene, featuring an A-list of Denver funk players,
including Big Mike (PhantasmOrgasm), Maurice Avatar (Sun Circus, Avatar), and
members of Lyric, Bad Rufus, and D-Bone. Spin-offs of the band spawned a host of
continuing funk projects around the state.
Turnover, however, became a problem. "By 1999," cHUCk says, "I couldn't keep
a funk engine going without the integral parts...people may have been down to play, but
not to do a 'funk show' as had been intended." Landauer surveyed the musical landscape
and decided that it was time to unify the funk elements at MH2 and give the world a
"bomb-ass" show. Landauer (featured on guitar, vocals, and a number of other
instruments), along with Wilson (keyboards and vocals) decided that fONKSQUISh, the
concept that had begun with the three in 1996, should be reinstated.
The band was rounded out with the additions of Aaron Langton, an MH2 partner
and multi-instrumentalist, on bass; and Mario Gonzales, who can be found on many MH2
recordings, on drums. fONKSQUISh's live show also features extra instrumentation by
the way of invited ax-slingers, percussionists, and other music makers who are welcomed
by the group. "To me it's my musical family onstage now," cHUCk says, "we can get
squishy with it." So what is fONKSQUISh music? You'll hear original tunes (that can be
found on cHUCk’s and MH2’s volumes of funk releases) and covers that draw on the rich
and varied legacy of funk, incorporating the sound of the 'founding fathers' with a next
century vibe. The sound may at times take you to outer space, but rest assured your booty
will remain grounded in the groove.
