Artist History
Kalu discovered her passion for music on the day her mother brought home an album by Barbara Steisand from the movie, A Star is Born. For the next 13 years, Kalu played and sang to that album, honing her vocal skills. She continued to sing to different artists within the pop realm, refining her voice as she grew. While recording a demo, she met a record label seeking female vocalists. Kalu was asked if she was a songwriter. She responded, "I am now." And that was the beginning of Kalu's songwriting foray. Tired of the same 'ole love/relationship themes in 99.9% of songs, Kalu began to write about situations we encounter in everyday life. |

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Nneji Kalu - Not What's Expected Indie Pop --------------------------------------------------------------------------------In a sort of Sinéad O'Connor/Bjork kind of way this music has that certain appeal the keeps the listener hanging on to every word. The songwriting is absolutely excellent and completely unique to anything I've heard. Nneji has one of the most alluring voices in music and uses it to perfect the circle of excellent musical seduction. This is one of those CD's that I couldn't put down. I found myself following alone with the lyric sheet and hanging on to every emotion of every word. The musical style jumps around a little giving the listener a little breathing room. This is a perfect CD for anyone looking for good music with great lyrical content. It's just that simple. - Michael Allison - THEGLOBALMUSE.COMIndie JournalReviews Nneji Kalu: Not What's Expected Genre buster Nneji Kalu fits into so many musical categories that to use one to define her music is simply unjust. Think of pop/light rock/jazz/folk and a bit of country all mixed together into a seamless CD. The arrangements are standard and well executed, but the draw here is the voice. Strong, flexible, with hints of Indian raga trills, jazz slides, and an occasional country twang, this woman's voice is stunningly unique. The subject matter of the songs (all written by Nneji Kalu) ranges from childhood memories ("I Remember When") to leaping into life ("Flying Solo") and though the melodic structure is minimal at best, the lyrics show a nice depth and sensitivity. The CD is a good investment for those looking for something easy to listen to but not banal. Female vocal fans will also want to give this CD a whirl, as Nneji Kalu is a fresh and wonderful voice amongst the endless top 40 clones. Keep your eye on her- she's one to watch and say you first heard her when...Nneji Kalo Website -Review by Pamela Zero©2000 Indie Journal |
