Press Reviews
13 After are a weirdo punk band, at least to those whose version of punk begins with Green Day and Blink 182, because 13 After aren't snot-nosed punks railing against the supposed injustices of their parents or preaching the glories of teen rebellion and hot sex. Guitarist/singer Brian Fisher is just as likely to cut the distortion and use a clean guitar sound in his catchy songs as he is to kick his foot at the pedals. They work as well with nuance and texture as they do with volume and speed. They've got no problems cutting to some freaky diversion right in the middle of a three-chord stomp — or to give the synth player some action. They'll go falsetto in the middle of a chorus just for the hell of it, all the while maintaining the solid energy they've built.Like all great punk bands, they're better players than they lead you to believe and are better at playing music than they are at promoting themselves — they don't even have a Web site, for God's sake. Most important, they probably don't call themselves a punk band. Because the best punk bands are simply great rock & roll bands, and despite the fact that 13 After rarely get the attention they deserve, they are a fine, stubborn rock & roll band. |
