Artist description
Climb aboard the rocket with Moneypenny, and soar through a melange of swirling melodies and power-pop rhythms. Led by guitarist Pete Fergus, Moneypenny is his vision of a bright new tomorrow. Songs about unrequited love and hanging out abound, driven by the cool, floating vocals of Renée Firner, the melodic basslines of Matt Smith, and the explosive drumming of Karl Geisler. Sliding through it all are Fergus' densely woven, sparkling guitar shenanigans. Moneypenny takes the Britpop of bands like The Stone Roses, Lush, and Ride, combines it with the American pop of The Spinanes and Belly, and emerges sounding like nothing else. |

Artist History
Moneypenny was formed in late 1997 in the midst of the Minneapolis raging alcoholic club scene. Firner had seen Smith and Fergus open for The Ocean Blue with their former band, Girl Friday, and declared that she would someday be their vocalist (despite the fact that she wasn't a singer). Fergus and Smith finally met Firner two years later in the local Anglophile crowd, and the nucleus of Moneypenny was formed. Geisler is the most recent addition to Moneypenny, having firmly established himself as a powerhouse drummer with local Minneapolis popsters, The Harlows. |

Press Reviews
"Elongated guitar lines...dreamy vocals...rich and cushy rhythms and chords..." - Star Tribune | "This local quartet spins out some finely textured power pop. Both live and on their CD, 'Apply the Labels', the contrast between Pete Fergus' guitar wizardry and Renee Firner's pristine vocals makes for an exciting tension." - Pulse of the Twin Cities | "Engaging..." - Milwaukee Shepherd Express | "[T]he six-string tones are quite beautiful. [A] respectable debut EP CD." - Toast |
