Press Reviews
Lines=of=Reason's self titled release (1999 Bluejay records) is an experienced and energetic expression that really stands out as asuperior work of bebop. In a genre where it often seems thateverything has been done to some extent, Lines=Of=Reason soundsfresh and vibrant. All of the musicians on this record arevirtuosos in their own rite, and together, they groove in an almosttelepathic way. Morning in Lima is a choice track to begin thealbum with, showcasing David Alan Gross's ballsy approach to thealto sax, Alan Nelson's explosive, yet tasteful fills, CalvinHill's incredible speed and definition on the bass, pianist Michael Cochrane's outstanding song writing skill. Other high points onthis record include the fast paced "Philly Joe", and the warm modal "Bass Instruments", which will leave you feeling like you justachieved seven levels of enlightenment. Lines=of=Reason is a mature, intelligent group, that really understands how to makegreat jazz, and when you combine that aspect with a high quality recording, you've got a great record. --Adam Kluckenberg, Homegrown Buzz Electrozine |
