Artist description
Fusing jazzy moods with inspired funky grooves,Jukejoint have been known to explore the works of such greats as Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter with their free-form interpretations. Injecting way-out guitar atmospherics and smoking improvisations around an air tight rhythm section, these guys update the past as they probe the flavours of jazz, jungle, drum & bass, funk, blues - anything with a heavy groove is open game as they experiment and push the limits with their fresh sound. |

Artist History
Jukejoint was formed in the spring of 1995 by Steve "Chili" Grebanier, with the notion of intersecting jazz with all that is funky. The result is a quartet of like-minded, jazz- inspired, groove oriented musicians supplying original funky compositions, and re-evaluations/ deconstructions of great jazz tunes from the past. Essentially, Jukejoint is a jazz band heavily influenced by modern urban culture and music.

Jukejoint's musical mandate is one of organic communication and improvisation. Each time a piece of music is performed, it takes on new light, new grooves, and new colours. The rules are to break the rules. Their independent CD release , "Choose To Groove", has been receiving on-going air-play on college stations in Canada and in International markets such as, Portugal & Holland, and is accumulating much media praise. Along with their original songs, Jukejoint fills out a large portion of their repertoire by revamping classic jazz compositions (Wayne Shoretr, J Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery,Thelonious Monk etc), giving them a strong backbeat edge and unexpected deconstructions. Also, individual improvisation plays a heavy role in the sound allowing for each song to take on a new vibe each time it's performed. They have shared billings with Canadian bands such as The Philosopher Kings, Jacksoul, Punjabi By Nature, Molly Johnson and Carole Welsman as well as with U.S. bands like New York's The Jazz Hole , Minneapolis' Greazy Meal & San Fran's Charlie Hunter Quartet. In 1998, their cross-Canada jazz festival tour culminated in two highlights...At The Montreal Jazz festival, Jukejoint was captured on an hour long live television simulcast on Quebec's "MusiquePlus" (vid clips can be seen on this site) At The Ottawa Jazz Festival, the band was recorded live by CBC Radio. Songs from this performance have been compiled and are now available ona limited number of CDs (Steamin' On TheCBC) Both of these documented performances display the true essence of a Jukejoint show.... Energy, improvisation and groove; and with CBC Radio frequently playing exerpts from the show, Jukejoint is building a strong name for itself across all of Canada. |
