Artist History
Formed in 1999 originally recording a demo of mannequin with only Dave and (former singer) Jon in the band. Continued as a 2 piece for some time before recruiting a bass player and 2nd guitarist. In early 2000 Jon left on good terms due to a frustration with being in bands in general. Blind Old Men released their 1st 15 track self produced demo album on tape and cd on June 1st 2000. |

Press Reviews
Review for Mannequin in local fanzineMannequin, strange name - perhaps, perhaps not. Kinda reflects on what Blind Old Men is all about - diversity. They can do everything and they have proven just that, once again. My first thought - well to be completely honest i wasn't as dramatically impressed as I was with city, although this is mostly due to the fact I had very high expectations from their previous song. However, after listening to it a couple of times, my opinion changed for the better. It grew on me. In fact its in my head right now, and I can't get it out. Why is it that BOM consistently manage to create catchy songs? I can't work it out - they are all different yet they all seem to string together so well, Mannequin being no exception! I particularly like the modulating synth and the distorted vocal effects, also the piano intro works quite well. If you are in a depressive or confused mood, and want some atmospheric music to add to your emotions - play some Mannequin. Review for city in local fanzineCity - A song of many rootsCity was the first song that I had heard from Blind Old Men, well the first finished song at least. My first impressions were somewhat different to what I would have expected from Dave, a hardened rock veteran, no, that is not how I would describe him, but lets just say that the song was more main stream than what I would have expected. In fact the quality of the song was also far superior to what I would have thought he would be able generate, considering the slightly worn microphone he uses, that is bordering on antique. All in all I was surprised at the way the song stuck in my head... so much in fact that I had to keep playing it. It was at this stage that I thought a test was in order. No, not the sort of test that would involve marking the song's different aspects. No that would be far too simple, instead I opted for perhaps the most difficult to test for any song that has ever been created, to pass. Harder in fact than gaining the Number 1 position in the UK charts. This was a test, that, if BOM's song could pass, it would surely gain them some respect in all musical genres. You may well be wondering what this test is, and that is a valid though, for I would be referring to a critic that I knew personally, and if he liked it, then most people would. His name was Aaron. And he doesn't like much, but he liked City. So after distributing Dave's song to a few close friends, and hearing their reactions, I was ready to give Dave my opinion of his song, and in fact I was able to give him a prediction of the songs success. It was true that everyone, who had heard the song, including my girlfriend and even my mum, had liked the song.I have been asked, by the man himself, the creator of City, Dave Crighton, to comment briefly about what I thought were his influences when creating this song. What a bastard... his songs have so many influences that I am gonna be here all night. No only joking, true, his songs do seem to span a vast range of musical categories and they could have an almost infinite library of influences, but I think it is possible to highlight the main ones. Firstly, and I think perhaps it was the main inspiration that made Dave and Jon sit down and start to write the song, was Frozen by Madonna. A first class song in its own right, and you may not see in obvious connection, but if you listen closely, as they did, and try to work out what it is that makes the song so good, it is in fact the ambient sounds and background noises that complement the instruments and make the song a whole lot better. The next influence that helped to craft City was a song made by an unheard of and now dissolved band called, Mirror Image, in particular the song LAS. They share a similar introduction and about 5 words, apart from that they are almost completely different.Paul Maunders |
