Press Reviews
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...Skycycle. Named after the two-wheeledrocket Evel Kneivel used in his attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon in1974, Skycycle is the new four-piece superpop/rock band whose debut album,Ones And Zeros, is faster than a speeding Harley, more powerful than astealth bomber and able to leap the Grand Canyon in a single bound. Yes,Skycycle... who, disguised as four mild-mannered musicians based in SouthernCalifornia, fight a never-ending battle for truth, beauty and musicalsalvation. In, fact, with Ones And Zeros, Skycycle puts to rest thecurrent notion that rock & roll is dead.A few years back, Steve Isaacs, frontman/leader of Skycycle, spent 16 monthstouring 32 cities in the title role of "The Who's Tommy," all the whilewriting songs for the band he planned on forming. Seven months afterfinishing his stint as the world's most famous fictional "deaf, dumb andblind boy," the years of planning paid off when Skycycle played its firstshow ever. Before long, Skycycle (which also includes guitarist Sven Shenar, bassistKelly Castro and drummer Chris Cano) had a deal with MCA Records, and in thesummer of 1998 released the Breathing Water EP, a sparkling six-song samplerof what these guys were all about. The EP was a perfect introduction to thestyle and sound of Skycycle: equal parts '60s pop sensibility, '70s pompgrandiosity, '80s coolness, and '90s flash, all cosmically connected byIsaacs' intelligent, insightful lyrics and clear, crystalline vocals.Fast-forward to 2000 and Skycycle is about to turn the world onits ear with the release of Ones and Zeros, a brilliant collection of newmusic that delivers on the promise of the Breathing Water EP, combining thatrecord's inventive pop charm with state-of-the-art 21st Century sonics andemerging with the first great album of the new millennium.Right from the first few bars of "Figure 8," a future-shock fantasy, it'sobvious that this isn't going to be your average, ordinary, garden-varietypop/rock record. Intermingling the harder edge of Cheap Trick with thevision of Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie, it packs as much excitement in lessthan five minutes as all of The Phantom Empire does in two+ hours. And,like George Lucas' brainchild, the pace doesn't let up for the rest of theride. "Help Yourself", kicks in with a laser guitar riff that carries right through to the climax of this pop gem, ending with the repeated refrain,"...You've got to help yourself.""Antebellum" is up next, a high-energy rocker inspired by Isaacs' stint asan employee at Disneyland, "the happiest place on earth." Other highlightson an album that's nothing BUT highlights include the gently sweet "All"(brace yourself for the middle-eight); "eMail Girl" and "(She Can Be)Anything," two songs culled from the remains of a cyberspace love affair; amodern-day reworking of The Beach Boys classic "God Only Knows" and "RamonaThe Palm Reader," which Isaacs describes as a "story-song, part of a larger20-song conceptual piece called Strawberry."Obviously, Steve Isaacs is nothing if not ambitious, but he's alsoremarkably down-to-earth and optimistic. "It's an exciting time--everybodyalways talks about how great the '60s or the '70s were, or must have been, but there are some really amazing changes taking place--the internet isreally a beautiful frontier." to that end, Isaacs personally built andmaintains Skycycle's official Web site himself, and his talents as a Webdesigner have also been put to use by Sugar Ray, who asked Steve to buildtheir official site after checking out what he'd done with Skycycle Online.Ones And Zeros was produced by the band with the help of engineer/producersRich Mouser and Neil Avron (Everclear), and despite some of the lushproduction touches, anybody who's experienced the band in concert will tellyou that Skycycle always delivers the goods onstage, and is even betterlive. The title and overall concept of Ones And Zeros refers to the future ofsociety via the information superhighway and the way thatwe're able to take the wealth of the world's knowledge - history, science, entertainment, art and commerce - and, in Steve's words,"...just smasheverything down to ones and zeros."Judging by what Skycycle has accomplished with Ones And Zeros, all thoselittle numbers add up to nothing less than the future of rock & roll. |
